Madison named one of the most gay-friendly cities in America
MADISON (WKOW) -- Advocate Magazine and Advocate.com ranked Madison the #5 gayest city in America in its February 2010 issue.

According to the national gay and lesbian news magazine, "Madison is often called the Berkeley of the Midwest—the east side is hippie-crunchy, there's a brand-new gay dance club (Plan B), and heaps of cute blond dreadlocked nuevo organic farmer dudes can be found at the Willy Street Co-op or the Farmers' Market drinking their own beer from mason jars."

This isn't Madison's first ranking as a gay-friendly city. The Madison Gay Hockey Association was named Outsports' Top Gay Sports Groups in April of 2009. The UW-Madison Campus rated among the nation's best LGBT-friendly campuses in The Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students, August 2006.

Rounding out the list for the top 5 gayest cities in America:

Atlanta, GA
Burlington, VT
Iowa City, IA
Bloomington IN
Madison, WI

3. Plus Madison is a great place.
Mickey's Dairy Barn is pretty much all I have to say about that. It's not my top choice, but I know that if I go there, I'll have a great experience.

4. They also host the Madison Scouts, one of only two all-male DCI corps.
I performed with them in 1994. I don't think they're in the top six in DCI standings any more (maybe not even top 12, which is a damn shame). Too bad, really; crowds always seem to like them.

The only time they won the World Championship title was in 1988, when they ended their show with "Malaguena". Here's the link to a video of the final piece from that performance:

6. Wow, Atlanta is #1?
I live in Atlanta, and I'm really surprised by that. Not that I don't find Atlanta to be gay-friendly, but I would think that some of the "gay meccas" like San Francisco, Chicago, or New York would have placed higher on the list. Eh, go figure.

I've never been to Madison, but I was in Milwaukee for a week last summer. It's absolutely beautiful up there! :hi:

7. In some of the huge cities there are gay neighborhoods
and establishments... lots of gay people but they are segregated. At least it seemed that way to me when I lived in Chicago. Madison has a few bars where gays hang out but in general gay couples go everywhere. It helps that we have an out of the closet gay congresswoman, Tammy Baldwin.

8. Now I got an email back from my daughter.
I forwarded the article to her. She thought it was funny. She says the community in Madison is small. She is surprised that Bloomington made the list because it is in the middle of serious redneck country.
