Archbishop defends decision on lesbians’ children
Archbishop defends decision on lesbians’ children
By The Associated Press
03.09.2010 3:30pm EST

(Denver) The archbishop of Denver on Tuesday defended a decision by a Catholic school not to allow two children to continue as students because their parents are a lesbian couple.

Archbishop Charles J. Chaput said it was a “painful situation,” but the decision by Sacred Heart of Jesus parish school in Boulder was in line with church teachings.

Chaput said the school told the parents that one of the children could complete kindergarten and the other could complete preschool, but neither could continue after that.

Previous reports indicated only one child was involved. Neither the parents nor the children have been identified.

Mindy Barton, legal director of the GLBT Community Center in Denver, which supports gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, said she believes the school was within its legal rights.

Barton has said the center would still investigate to determine whether the school violated any discrimination laws.

About two dozen protesters stood outside Sacred Heart of Jesus church on Sunday with signs, one reading “God loves all people.”

2. AWFUL. I would have thought that they would have been eager
to have the kids there to proselytize them. Bass-ackwards and just mean spirited. The "GAY" isn't contagious, for crying out loud.

7. Some people just love to hate, all they need is some group to hate, it seems
to be part of the fabric of some humans. Gays are a convenient target. And the catholic church has a ripe history of hatred for many and extremely evil offenses against mankind. In my book it's a pretty creepy evil religion.

6. The Catholic hierarchy needs to learn about people living in glass houses
and stop throwing stones. Do the members of the church hierarchy they not realize how hypocritical they are being act like this?

13. You Don't Have To Be Gay To Be a Homophobe.
The vast majority of catholics are straight.

9. When are they going to start booting out kids of divorced parents?
Or worse, divorced and remarried? What about the children of adulterers? What about those who have parents who are guilty of onanism?

Are the children of murderers still welcome?

11. Homosexuality will ultimately be the church's downfall....
Public sentiment will keep moving to full acceptance, inclusion and recognition that homosexuality is part of the human condition. If the church does not change it will become marginalized and fall into obscurity like all the other religions that have failed to adapt to social evolution.

It would be sad as Catholicism is beloved by so many and is rich in beautiful ritual. But add the bloody past and contemporary scandal to today's stances...I don't think the church will ultimately survive making people choose faith over family.

Unfortunately it seems the social controlling aspect of church doctrine cannot be modernized when it comes to homosexuality.

16. RC Church has zero credibility on child welfare issues.
When they are no longer complicit in raping children, then they can complain about others.
