Gates to announce changes to ban on gays in military

Gates to announce changes to ban on gays in military
By Roxana Tiron - 03/23/10 04:56 PM ET
Defense Secretary Robert Gates is close to announcing changes in the way the Department of Defense enforces the law that bans openly gay people from serving in the military.

“I think he is prepared to offer a way ahead on that subject this week,” Geoff Morrell, the Pentagon press secretary, told reporters Tuesday.

Gates will address “the changes that he is going to be making to the department's policy to provide for a more humane enforcement and application of the law,” Morrell said.

Gates directed the Pentagon’s legal counsel in February to explore ways to relax enforcement of the law commonly known as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

1. The first review was due Friday, March 19 . (correction)

The General Counsel of the Department of Defense was supposed to report to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates on how to apply DADT in a “fairer and more appropriate way” on March 19.

8. This begs the question
How does one apply discrimination in a fairer and more appropriate way?

What a crock.

3. This should have been done already. I doubt there would much
if any opposition to it now, as the public at large, and the military itself, are for it by a majority. This is one of the easier issues to get support for right now. Which is why you have to ask why it was not done already.

I think it will be done but not until close to the November Election. With so much of the base, the people who actually do the work of getting Dems elected, demoralized and disinterested because of the many flip flops and the outright exclusion of liberals from the Health Care debate, the Dem. Party will need something to get them back in time to help them win in November.

10. Should have been done last month Gates
I was a bit optimistic at some of the testimony last month. Until I heard about the AF Sargent outed by local police. Don't understand why Sec. of Defense and/or Head of Joint Chiefs can't immediatly implement a policy to suspend proceedings for forced discharges under a wide variety of cases.
