Kristin Chenoweth "Offended" by Ramin Setoodeh's Homophobic Article in "Newsweek"
More than a week ago, I wrote an article lambasting Newsweek and their entertainment reporter Ramin Setoodeh for his article "Straight Jacket" which ruminated on the reasons why Setoodeh believed many gay actors couldn't play straight roles.

The reaction among AfterElton.com readers and others in the GLBT community was suitably outraged, but alas, the mainstream media didn't pay much attention.

That might be about to change now that Broadway and TV actress Kristin Chenoweth posted the following comment on Setoodeh's article over on Newsweek.com. Here is what Chenoweth had to say:

1. Thanks to Kristin!
She's from my metro area, and I think her attitude shows that not all native Oklahomans are what people think they are.

Change moves slowly sometimes, but it does move.

4. Andy - do you live in the greater Broken Arrow metro area?
Glad you commented on the Oklahoma connection. Cheno is amazing in every way and represents so well.

14. Do a YouTube search on her too.
She's pint sized and sounds kind of like a muppet when she talks, but she's got crazy powerful pipes for singing.

to explain why I had a knot in the pit of my stomach and a bad taste in my mouth. i am beginning to hate Newsweek and plan to get rid of my subscription.

6. Every single time I see her, I fall in love again.
Does that qualify me to play straight? What a great performer she is.

7. I got an offer to get Newsweek really cheap for a year.
I haven't read it for years. I was considering it but if that's the crap they've been printing - no thanks.

15. You have one on me. I didn't even know who he was.
Ironic, since I just watched The Bucket List last night.

9. Coming out of retirement to post, OMG, if Setoodeh doesn't set off your gaydar,

you must be braindead. He the total Andrew Sullivan type - that's why Fox likes him; a self-loathing gay man (I'd bet dollars to donuts).

10. Oh, wait- I guess Setoodeh is openly gay, from the afterelton link.

That makes the similarity with Andrew Sullivan even more striking.

Here's a youtube link where he conducts an interview:

From that clip, he's pretty, but, upholding the stereotype about pretty people, he doesn't seem like the sharpest knife in the drawer.

12. Love. Her.
And good comments, too. I didn't know she was a Christian - a *real* one, it seems. That's a rarity in itself.

13. I Am So Relieved To See This
I've admired Kristin Chenowith for her talent, but didn't know anything about her personally. I got her Christmas album, and it was a little heavy on the CHRIST part, so I was afraid she might be a judgmental christian with capital C. Very glad to find out that she's unapologetically pro-gay. Of course, I can barely imagine working on Broadway and being in any way anti-gay, but then again, there was that jackass Dean Jones...
