As of Wednesday, May 19, police hadn’t made any arrests in the aggravated robbery that occurred at about midnight last Friday on Throckmorton Street near Congress Avenue, approximately two blocks southwest of the Crossroads.

The two victims — Kyle Wear and Alex Bowers, both 28 — were walking from a house party toward the bars on Cedar Springs when they were jumped by four Latino males in white tank tops wielding baseball bats.

According to a police report, one of the assailants struck Wear in the face with a bat and yelled, “Give me all of your fucking money you fucking fag.”

It was on local news here - it's just that even with police patrols going up and down those streets, there is still opportunity to make trouble.

The dumbest thing is the misconception that gays have lots of money because we (theoretically) don't have children, so you're more likely to get more cash by holding up a gay person in the gay ghetto than some drunk nitwit in uptown.

The police that patrol and stand guard down there are "gay friendly" if not openly gay themselves - it's not entirely fair to characterize them as uncaring or apathetic.

5. And that opportunity was exacerbated by the police not notifying

the local businesses and community watch that it had happened for four days. Maybe they aren't uncaring or apathetic - but that would certainly leave incompetent on the table.

A simple notification might mean the next guy may not be engrossed in texting while walking along that area, and see the bashers coming.

7. but it was in the news immediately

I caught it at 4:00 a.m. the next morning - and again in the evening news. It's a pretty tight community on that strip - and literally the parking lot behind the biggest bars there gets so full that people park further and further down the street into some unsavory and poorly lit areas.

Those areas have never been considered "safe" - and I know it sounds ridiculous to say just a couple of blocks away it's already unwise to park.

You know I'm on my way down there right now for happy hour. I might just go for a little walk tonight . . . . :P I'm nice and limber and ret 2 go for a little light exercise.

Unfortunately that area down past the Office Depot is what used to be called "Homo Heights", or the "Gay Ghetto" (clears throat) decades ago, and it really hasn't changed all that much in spite of Cedar Springs itself being a fantastic socially enlightened area.
