Garden Planted at Antigay Attack Site

Activists in New York City's Staten Island borough planted a garden Saturday outside the White Castle restaurant where an antigay attack occurred last month.

According to NY1, the garden outside the fast-food restaurant calls for tolerance following the attack against Richard and Luis Vieria, who were beaten in July. The unsolved crime is one of 10 bias attacks, mostly against immigrants, that have occurred in the borough since April.

NY1 reported that one participant said, "Well, I think that the attacks that happened here a month ago are indicative of some of the ignorance that is rampant on Staten Island. Since it was young people that were involved, we really need to help the young people understand that everybody has a right to live in their community, and maybe getting to know people will help get rid of some of the animosity that people seem to feel."

The Saturday events included a rally and march as well as the garden planting.
