Republicans block Obama’s 9th Circuit nominee

Senate Republicans blocked the appointment of Obama’s nominee for the Ninth Circuit Court Goodwin Liu. His nomination was returned to the president, who according to an anonymous White House official is expected to resubmit the nomination.

Liu was a Rhode scholar and a Supreme Court Clerk. He is currently a law professor at University of California Berkeley. He served as an attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union of California from 1985 to 2001- a fact which many of the Republicans opposing his nomination site regularly.

Liu is accused of being too liberal for the bench. He supports both same-sex marriage and affirmative action.

Fire Dog Lake wrote, “Obama has submitted to the Senate 63 trial court nominations and 22 for the appeals courts. At the same point in his first term, George W. Bush had nominated 83 trial judges and 32 for the appeals courts, according to Russell Wheeler, a scholar at the Brookings Institution in Washington.”
