New Poll Finds Most Oppose DADT Repeal
New Poll Finds Most Oppose DADT Repeal
August 10, 2010
Military.com|by Bryant Jordan

Groups dedicated to keeping in place the ban on gays serving openly have released the results of a survey indicating the majority of Americans oppose lifting the so-called Don't Ask, Don't Tell prohibition.

The poll, sponsored by the Center for Military Readiness and the Military Culture Coalition, found a majority of respondents – 48 percent – oppose repealing the 1993 law.

Center for Military Readiness President Elaine Donnelly predicted that the opinions of likely voters reflected in the new survey would give lawmakers yet another reason to support the current law.

"Americans understand that the current push for sexual minorities in the military is motivated by politics, not principle," she said in a statement. "Instead of seeking favor with a minority of (homosexual) activists, lawmakers should heed the advice of military leaders who support the current law."

Additionally the poll found that lawmakers who vote to lift the current prohibition on abortions at military medical facilities do so "at their own political peril."

unhappycamper comment: I didn't realize that 48% was a majority.

5. God I'm tired of hearing about this. Repeal DADT and move on... this is one fixated
country generally on the wrong stuff. This country will never lead in the 21st century, its too backward.

6. I agree, Obama should have done it on day one. The
President is Commander in Chief give the f------g order and if any of the brass in the Pentagon don't like it show them the door. If he would have done it 1 1/2 ago it would be all but forgotten by everyone but a few right wing loonies.

8. Yep, he does this with a number of things, drags them on and on and on and
meanwhile all of the right wing loonies make it a larger and larger mountain to hurdle and those that might have just let it pass then climb on board against it all just in principle. It's not a smart way to get things accomplished IMO. Too much consensus building often makes consensus fall apart.

9. Look at the HCR, he got elected with the promise
of getting health care for everyone. Instead going for it he tries to appease the Republicans and over the period of a year even most Democrats had soured on it. My Congressman may loose his seat because he voted for it.

10. I know my dem. congressman is gone in Nov. Around here everyone is really PO'ed about
health care and the dems are going to suffer for it... He had the mandate of the people, the majorities, and you would have thought congress was a republican majority on day one. Then he runs catchup a year later when it's all falling apart.

12. Once again, you cannot order away statute law.
It would no more be legal for Obama to order the law ignored than it was for Bush to order the laws against torture ignored. It requires an act of Congress to change the law. That's currently underway.

7. That's positively laughable
Their own poll (the Center for Military Readiness) conducted by their own people with their own methodology, which does not come anywhere close to what other polls say on the issue and yet the best they could cook up was 48-41.

11. +1 Even they must have been surprised by the result. Not what they were expecting.
