oh well, this was our apex
I am sick and tired of it all. I will continue with Steve Pougnet's campaign to beat Mary Bono, and Prop 19's passage , then I'm out. Never will we see a repeal of Dadt, never an ENDA vote, Never a vote on the employee free choice act . Our majority was squandered by ineptitude and cowardice and no discipline to wayard Dems. This Gaytm is out of business.Thank you to our allies who did what they could.

1. I think this vote was --
the "bone" thrown to liberals/LGBT to get them all fired up! about the upcoming election.

Maybe it's just me, but that "bone" had zero meat on it. :puke:

6. This is not too little progress. This is retrograde progress.
Even if the dems do (as I suspect will happen) hang onto both houses, they will be weakened in both. The half-assed, compromised measures and outright failures of the first two years are the BEST we are going to see from this administration. From here out, it is all downhill.

This president was elected with the greatest majority of any president since Reagan and threw it all away by listening to the proven failures of the DLC. If he had insisted on putting up DADT in his first year, it would have passed with overwhelming public support - even the blue dogs were coasting on his coattails.

He allowed the DLC to shape his policies, got battered by the astroturf tea baggers, and now the Dems are playing defense - badly.

Where do you see progress in that?

I get annoyed at the level of vehemence and somewhat erroneous assumptions -

The prez didn't break his word, and this fight ain't over.

If this really WAS the apex, If THEY WON, then all we were waiting for was a handout, not a change in the law.

I get the feeling that the struggle is going to get harder.

it's the fucking congress that needs the real blame here, those worthless sniveling shits.

She's in a close race, right? So, if she's going to turn up with a dagger in her back, let it be our name found etched into the handle. As a warning to the others.

Rewarding friends will always be a political necessity, but we cannot forget to punish enemies when needed, too. People will value your friendship much more and remember to be loyal friends, if they understand that it is not smart to make an enemy of you.

36. OK, what's your plan for me?
I'm voting a straight Democratic ticket in November. I don't have much spare pocket change, but I've been donating a small amount to Jerry Brown every month (because his is the most important race in California, AFAIC, and I can't give to everyone). I haven't the time or money to go to this march on Washington. I'm not represented by any Republicans at the moment, so I have no one to complain at. The DNC is not getting a dime from me, because the GayTM at this house was shut a long time ago, and will remain that way. (Go ahead and scold me for that one if you want, but if you do, I'll understand you don't get it at all.)

Chronic sciatica prevents me from canvassing. I've done all the phonebanking I ever intend to do -- I am not a good phonebanker, because it depresses me and makes me want to run as far away from politics as possible.

I do blog against RW assholes, and when particularly angry, write letters to the editor.

What else do you expect me to do?

Really? What?

9. That's right. NONE of this matters:

hosted a reception for 300 LGBT activists at the White House to honor LGBT Pride

appointed more openly gay people to his administration than the last two combined, including the first ever transgender appointees

awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Harvey Milk and Billie Jean King

signed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act

spoken out against LGBT discrimination at the National Prayer Breakfast

spoken out about repealing Don’t Ask/Don’t Tell in his first State of the Union Address

invited gay families to the Easter Egg Roll as part of the Obama administration's outreach to diverse communities

publicly invited shunned gay Mississippi high school prom student to the White House

extended the Family and Medical Leave Act to cover employees taking unpaid leave to care for the children of same-sex partners

It ain't much, but it's a start.

17. Your list is a tribute to privileged cluelessness
It's not even that the list is patronizing - which it is - it's that it's cruel. You may as well wander through a gay neighborhood sporting a placard saying "I have no idea about your issues, and I couldn't care less!"

At least our Republican opposition is honest. With them, we can test our strength and political will in defeating their bigotry. But this kind of "ally" nonsense is worse, because it undercuts our community every step of the way. Whenever we try to get our war footing in the push for equality, these "allies" of ours start throwing banana peels on the ground.

Jesus Christ. A cocktail party? A mention in a speech or two? An EASTER EGG ROLL?! This is what you've padded your list with? This is what you're telling people fighting for their very civil rights they should be pleased with?

Shame on you. Shame on your privileged attitude and your comfort with our inequality and the squandering of the most powerful Democratic government in a generation.

Just stop it. Stop "helping" us. It's hurtful at this point.

Have you no decency at all?

Well....... I feel no need to justify my involvement in or my stances to you concerning the GLBT community.

Not one whit. You're nothing but a disjointed typist on a message board. Who can say who you really are?

This goes for me, too.

BUT: I will say that it's funny that I never see the hatred, the self pity or the complete lack of real advocacy among my friends as with some of the folks here who would set themselves up as the arbiters as what is truly solidarity or support of the gay community, and what is not.

Fuck me raw, some ass was in here claiming Anderson Cooper wasn't being gay enough because he lives a quiet life out, 24/7, but doesn't proselytize about it 24/7.

Whatever floats you boat with the name calling and the shame. I'll let my real life speak for me.

produced U.S. Census Bureau PSAs featuring gay, lesbian, and transgender spokespersons  ...
extended domestic violence protections to LGBT victims  ...

Woo! Who's with me?! Let's all make sure more of THEM get into office!

And fine--if you don't want our help, that's fucking fine with me. The President stepped into a situation with two out-of-control wars, an economy in a death spiral, a party in power that can't keep its cats penned up, and an opposition who is more or less a solid block of NO--and you're pissed cause your pet issue wasn't addressed on day one.

No one was asking you to be content with the list that was presented--the person who posted it was merely asking you to recognize it.

And if you want patronizing you oughta read your post again. It's DRIPPING with arrogance and self-important bilge.

35. If I hear about that fucking Easter Egg Roll again...
...I'm going to scream so loudly, I'll break the glass in the space station a la Ella Fitgerald.

Clifford, can you please -- PLEASE -- stop posting such meaningless lists and then chiding us for not falling on our faces in gratitude?

It's hard for me to comprehend that you don't understand, after all your years on DU, that none of this does matter, save for 1) the Family and Medical Leave Act (which is lovely for parents, but does nothing for the rest of us, and would be completely unnecessary if we had marriage), and 2) signing the Matthew Shepard Act, which any president in his right mind would do -- and was the final result of more than a decade of blood, sweat and tears by LGBT people, led by that tireless saint Judy Shepard.

The rest of it is all empty symbolism -- and by repeating these meaningless lists over and over again, all you're telling me is that you either really don't understand the real issues affecting LGBT Americans, or you do, but think you can shame us into thinking we're very stupid, selfish people.

Whatever the truth, you appear to be having fun scolding us as if we were idiot children. Really, you do.

And you're not helping. I don't know if you really want to help, or you're just pissed off at gays because we don't take anything from this administration at face value -- and, what? you feel compelled to some mission to yank us all in line?

The reality is that all you're doing is just beating us -- and morale is not improving.

Finally, your timing is really, really bad. Can't you wait even 24 hours for us to begin to try to recover from yet another hard slap across the face before you begin scolding us again? Can you manage that, even once?

Talk about demoralizing.

I guess I don't understand the White House's advocacy.

And none of us will be invited to some swanky East Room cocktail party. I don't even know what the point of listing that, since it has nothing do to with repealing DADT, repealing DOMA and passing ENDA and working towards our equality. But I'm glad Joe Solomonese gets to sip champagne in the White House. Good for Joe.

20. Sick...and tired...
Just came from Kos where the fanboys are gleeful about the vote today - yes, they think it gives Democrats a great 'campaign issue' and was a terrific 'tactic' for the upcoming midterms. They even think it's going to fire up the LGBT community to flock to the polls in droves in November...talk about clueless...

The fact is we were SCREAMING for this to be brought to a vote last year. LAST YEAR. Scott Brown's seat was still held by a Democrat and Lincoln wouldn't have dicked around with her vote because it was 7 weeks from election day.

Yes, what the Republicans did today was detestable - but I believe the blame also goes to the piss poor 'leadership' from the administration and the hapless, helpless Reid. We begged them to vote on this earlier, and were told to be patient...to not ask for ponies...and the vote was scheduled in the middle of midterm electioneering, when we're in a weaker position that we were in 2009. But we aren't supposed to be pissed, and in fact we're supposed to allow this massive failure to be carried as some kind of a banner in the midterms. Doesn't matter how many lives have been shattered by this policy, or that Obama won't even stop the discharges until this fucked-up matter somehow gets resolved.

37. First, I thank you for helping Steve Pougnet!
And, you will live to see DADT overturned. I believe it will happen this year, maybe in the lame duck congress, but it will.

Today was historic. The Democrats grew some spine and forced a vote on the issue. We had 57 (Reid's vote keeps it alive) Senators voting to kill this thing. That's the big story. It only takes 51 or 50 with Biden once on the floor. But today, 57 Senators voted to kill it.

mitchtv, they are losing. The GOP's voter base is dying off. The demographics are tidal against them. Today, these Senators were dragged to vote their bigotry. What amazes me is that we had 57 support killing DADT. Take some heart in that.

And, again, thank you for your help to get Mary Bono out of Congress. I think you rock. :)
