My daughter tried to start a GSA at her elementary school today
She met with the principal, and even though she had a teacher lined up who agreed to be the advisor, it was a no-go. Not surprising, but I had some hope.

She's kind of depressed and is wondering if she should take it to the next level.

Anyone else here ever tried to start one? How did it go?

Too bad the school officials are so closed minded.

3. Geological Society of America? Does the principal have something against rocks?
What's all this fuss about rocks music??

Nevermind.

5. Hmmm. Apparently it's important enough to post, but not important enough to be clear.

I see now that this was posted in the GLBT Forum, so apparently the "G" stands for gay, but it'd be nice to know what the rest means. "Gay Student Association?" "Gay South America?"

7. Thank you. I hate acronyms. I used to work with folks in the health field who...

...had an acronym for EVERYTHING, right down to using the restroom. And they'd look at you like an IDIOT if you ever had to ask what one meant. Just petty.

Good job to Sabriel's daughter for trying to start a Gay Straight Alliance in her school! :yourock:

4. I have never heard of one in an elementary school
but I am the advisor of a high school GSA. Here is the short, lay person version of the legality of GSA's. If a school allows any non school sponsered clubs, such as say a chapter of the fellowship of Christian Athletes, then they have to allow the GSA.

10. She was disturbed by the news last week of the suicides
As were we all. She figured it was too late by the time kids got to middle school, so it seemed like an elementary GSA would be appropriate.

One of the stories she told the principal was hearing another 6th grader changing "Capture the Flag" to "Capture the Fag" and repeating it over and over again. And, of course, she hears, "That's so gay" every day.

She's right about the need for it...and since there's no GSA at the middle school she'll go to next year, I guess she'll try again there.

Glad to hear you're the advisor for a high school version. We don't have too many of those here, either.

9. No. But can I adopt her?
>>>Anyone else here ever tried to start one? How did it go?>>>

I do believe the GLSEN website has info design to walk one thru the process. There may be an analogous site for GSAs.

Remember. I've got dibs on her.

11. OK, but I'll warn you that she's vegetarian
And she wears a size 9.5 shoe, so you probably won't be able to share shoes.

13. Elementary school??
I think more people would be open to it at a middle school.

I wish your daughter the best.

Maybe she can start a no bullying campaign?
