LGBTQ question
When did the Q get added to LGBT, and how is it not already subsumed by LGBT?

I asked this in a thread in GD and never got a response so I figured it would better to ask it here.

5. A sketch from The Kids in the Hall ...
Buddy Cole stepping in to take the place of an injured female softball player ...

Buddy: I'll handle this.

Female: But you're a man!

Buddy: (turning his head to the camera) Labels!

7. I'm still trying to feel comfortable with "gays and lesbians"
To me, it's like saying, "people and women." I wish there were a good blanket term that could actually be pronounced, like "The More Highly Evolved Ones."

10. I don't know when it was added but,
when I use it, it means Questioning. It seems to me that Queer is kind of redundant.

12. A lot of people identify as queer, ESP people who have multiple id's within lgbt
Edited on Wed Oct-13-10 05:04 PM by La Lioness Priyanka
A dear friend of mine is t and b, and prefers queer. I frankly prefer queer to bi too, as I find binaries in gender dumb. With every generation and with the growing people of color LGBTQI movements, the names are going to change.

For instance most black queers identify as same gender loving these days. SGL.

13. Hmm, SGL? So many acronyms to keep track of.
How about we stick with person :) We are all people who are worthy of the same love, rights, and respect as anyone else :)

16. in identity politics, identities are imp. if we just stick with person
our differing identities of who we are as persons and the prejudices we face, get taken away

in a utopia person would be a perfect descriptor, but in reality not so much

edit: and think people tend to spend way too much time focusing on our differences and not enough time focusing on our similarities.

20. I think that's easily said when your concerns and input are not the ones ignored
Edited on Wed Oct-13-10 10:29 PM by La Lioness Priyanka
People create new acronyms because they feel the old one ingores them. Miost of the new acronyms are creating by further marginalized groups who feel their needs are often ignored by 'mainstream gays'
