Vince Vaughn Wants to Have His Gay Cake and Eat it Too

Deadline.com is reporting that actor Vince Vaughn, the star of the upcoming comedy The Dilemma has weighed in on the "gay" joke that Universal Studios recently pulled from the movie's trailer. Says Vaughn:

Let me add my voice of support to the people outraged by the bullying and persecution of people for their differences, whatever those differences may be. Comedy and joking about our differences breaks tension and brings us together. Drawing dividing lines over what we can and cannot joke about does exactly that; it divides us. Most importantly, where does it stop.

Did you get that? If it becomes socially unacceptable to use the word "gay" as a punchline for a joke that implies that something or someone is lame or weak or lesser than, not only will we remain "divided" but we'll very clearly be headed toward broad censorship of anything offensive.

Which is of course exactly what happened when it become socially unacceptable to use racial slurs or slurs for women. I mean, we're practically a totalitarian state now. I guess the New York Yankees should let fans keep performing this version of "Y.M.C.A" because we wouldn't want to censor anyone or keep all these great people from being "brought together."

The story references the movie he's in that uses the phrase 'gay' in relation to a car. Complaints made them pull the scene from the trailer.

Mr. Vaughn says that it's wrong to bully people but that it's OK to use 'gay' when it's related to humor because that, as he says, brings us together.

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) on Friday rejected Vince Vaughn's defense of a gay joke in the upcoming Ron Howard-directed comedy film The Dilemma.

Laughing about our differences brings us together, Vaughn said in responding to calls to cut the joke from the film, set for release in January.

After CNN host Anderson Cooper criticized the film's trailer during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Universal Pictures responded by altering the online version of the trailer.

The new trailer no longer includes Vaughn's character in a boardroom saying, “Electric cars are gay. I mean not 'homosexual' gay, but 'my parents are chaperoning the dance' gay.”

Why would I want to sit through the whole movie? When a person says "that's gay" about something he/she doesn't like, then it is an INSULT to gay people. Why is that so fucking hard to understand?
