UW-Eau Claire adminstration flunks professor for sending anti-gay e-mail to student


University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire professor Tom Hilton could use a refresher course or two on the subjects of Diversity and Web Etiquette.

The University is taking administrative action against Hilton for sending an anti-gay e-mail to a Women’s Studies senior to discourage her efforts to advertise the gay-friendly Eau Queer Film Festival. According to The Spectator, the professor wrote:

“I applaud reminders that people who identify themselves as gay or lesbian are people, fellow humans who deserve affection and respect. However, I decry attempts to legitimize their addictions and compulsions. These, our fellow humans, deserve our best efforts to help them recover their lives.“

On the receiving end of this e-mail was Crystal Kazik, a student that had sent her school’s faculty an e-mail asking for support in promoting the festival, reports the Chicago Tribune. Hilton has since apologized, said he worded his message poorly and will cooperate with any decision the University makes.

I'm embarrassed to say this person works in the same university system as I do and doesn't seem to support his own college's code of conduct:


"College of Business (UW Eau Claire) Code of Conduct
Act ethically and with integrity.
Accept responsibility for your actions.
Respect differences.
Be a team-player.
Support others in their academic endeavors.
Model the behavior and attitudes you want from others.
Serve your community."

Hey, Tom Hilton, there are plenty of other open-minded, student-centered business profs out there who are dying for your job. Why not step aside and let one of them have it?

Edited to add, response emails like this one also happen on our campus, when the LGTBQ committee and the student group send out announcements. And the nastiness comes from students, staff, and faculty, which is depressing.
