The Omaha Alliance for the Private Sector on Wednesday announced its opposition to a proposed city ordinance that would give gays, lesbians, bisexual and transgender people new protections against discrimination.

The ordinance, proposed by Omaha City Councilman Ben Gray, could affect every employer in the city and is expected to come up for a vote Tuesday.
“This legislation is one more example of out-of-touch politicians trying to force a needless law upon our community that makes it very difficult to do business and add jobs to the private sector,” said Phillip Young, executive director of the alliance.
Last month, Gray proposed changing Omaha's ordinances against discrimination to include sexual orientation, gender expression and gender identity. His proposal would make those groups a protected class under city code — protection they don't currently have under state or federal law.
