Conservative Coming Out Day insensitive
Discussions of political ideology and sexual orientation often go hand-in-hand, but it is rarely the case that conservatives steal ideas from the gay rights movement to promote their own cause. Last Wednesday, however, campus conservatives staged Conservative Coming Out Day in the Diag as part of a nationwide college plan to give voice to the often-unheard conservative minority on many college campuses. But instead of providing an outlet for conservatives, the event only succeeded in mocking National Coming Out Day, a day held each October to support lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. Political activism on campus is important, regardless of ideology, but the lack of respect shown by conservatives was tasteless and counterproductive.

Wednesday’s activities, sponsored by a division of the Leadership Institute, attempted to paint conservatives as victims, marginalized by the oppressive liberal majority on college campuses. Criminology professor Mike Adams at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington wrote a letter on the institute’s website addressing “closet” conservatives saying, “Maybe you began to realize that you weren’t the same as all the other little boys and girls.” He mentioned students need not feel threatened or discriminated by campus “conserve-o-phobes.” Events mirrored those held on National Coming Out Day, such as photographing students that held posters stating, “I came out on National Conservative Coming Out Day” and distributing triangle-emblazoned “Conservative Pride” pins.

Conservatives are correct that their presence is often out-voiced or ignored on college campuses. But, there is a crucial distinction between the implications of being publicly conservative and being open about one’s sexuality. “Coming out” as conservative does not set oneself up for a lifetime of struggle against misperceptions, discrimination and hatred that many LGBT individuals encounter. Drawing this parallel makes light of the difficulties millions of Americans face each year in expressing their own sexuality and gender identity.

Conservatives must understand that it is neither humorous nor acceptable to promote awareness of conservative issues by making fun of legitimately marginalized groups. Campus conservatives should have explored more constructive ways to gain publicity and provide an outlet for their viewpoint that are not degrading to others. What adds insult to injury is that conservatives lead most legislative initiatives that keep members of the LGBT community as second-class citizens. Although underrepresented on many campuses, conservatives are hardly the victimized minority they claim to be.

1. Probably one of the reasons that conservatives are out-voiced and
outnumbered on college campuses is because . . .

THEY ARE NOW SURROUNDED BY PEOPLE WHO THINK AND HAVE EDUCATIONS!

2. I've got no sympathy for these "oppressed" college conservatives
I saw a number of them at my liberal college, even had one as my roommate. Most of them have never worked a day in their lives and have had everything handed to them. Their belief in their own superiority is beyond arrogant, and they have no qualms about bashing gays. And I will say that in spite of these kinds of behaviors, they are not "persecuted." Yes, they get people that disagree with them. They get called names sometimes because they are being jackasses, but what they go through is a far cry from what gays go through, and that's something that they themselves perpetuate. Conservatives love to play the victim. If they ever experienced what real prejudice and real discrimination feel like, they'd change their views pretty quick.

4. This is the petulance that's in the conservative character.
For 15 years they've had a childish attitude. When they're not appointing cronies they're saying "na na, na-na na," mocking everyone and not just gays.

Not only are they not funny, not original, they're incompetent idiots.

If I want funny, we can watch SNL, but we expect more from people who want to be leaders.

5. Plus, Being Conservative is a real choice
and is often supported by the parents and family, not something that you realize in shock about yourself as other gays are being persecuted for who they are perceived to be.

But I have to say that not all conservatives are irretrievably bad: both my partner's parents and mine are rabid right-wingers on many issues and they have come to accept the fact of our relationship which today celebrates nine years. Neither family was too thrilled when we came out to them originally, but we even received matching jackets for Christmas last year.

It helps that several other family members have come out as well; and there are now three gay couples that go to all the family events.

Coming out is the only way to smash the stereotypes, or, if you fall into a stereotype, to be able to show that beneficial, nurturing relationships can exist within those types.

7. Good point, dickthegrouch!
And we all know how those folks feel about "choices" such as sexual orientation. Guess they're just wanting those "special rights" we keep hearing about.

And welcome to DU, by the way! :hi:

8. Maybe we need to start pushing a constitutional amendment
that singles "conservatives" out for limited civil rights. . .and THEN they can start screaming about how they are "marginalized."

I'm sick and tired of these weenies bitching that they are victims simply because they are too cowardly to produce an original idea with any substantive support.

9. LOL ... For conservatives the idea of "original idea" ...
... is a lot like the concept of "original sin."

Both happened a long time ago to persons they can't possibly know.
