Paper Won't Print Gay Couple's Marriage Announcement
Man Says He's Shocked By Newspaper's Decision

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- The state's largest newspaper is coming under fire for its refusal to print a wedding announcement for a gay couple getting married this weekend in Portsmouth.

Manchester native Greg Gould said the day same-sex marriage became legal in New Hampshire was a proud one for him.

"It sort of highlighted all our values we had when we grew up -- individual thinking, independence," he said.

But he said one challenge they didn't expect came from the state's largest newspaper. The couple said the New Hampshire Union Leader told them that since it was a same-sex marriage, the paper would not print the announcement.

"I was really disappointed because the Union Leader is a big voice in the state of New Hampshire, and they seem to be so out of touch," Gould said.

As a New Hampshire resident I have been embarrassed time and again by the state's biggest paper, The Union Leader. But this is a really a new low. It is so ironic that at a time when many people are trying to send the message 'it gets better', others are busy sending the opposite message. I just hope the wedding couple can keep this from casting a shadow over their special day.

3. That's a dirty shame.
I wonder what the papers criteria is for wedding announcements? Seems like it should be a universal list of requirements.

4. Most of the comments on the tv web site that posted this story
are completely in favor of publishing the announcements. That was encouraging to see. Maybe this paper will marginalize itself with this move. New Hampshire is not the staunch Republican state it once was.

7. Does NH have an anti-discrimination law? Is the paper discriminating in a "public accommodation"?

8. It would be great to get the announcement and publish it throughout the Internet
... along with instructions on how to cancel your subscription to the Union Leader and encouragement to let the paper know why you have.

10. Their argument
From PHB is that they oppose marriage equality, don't think it should be legal, therefore it would be hypocritical of them to acknowledge that same-sex couples are getting married.

Or something. I'm kind of curious to find out who owns them.

I'm sure they'll get lots of support, though. Hell, the Unification Church's Daily Missive gave Tony Perkins an op-ed on Coming Out Day.
