No vote this year on gays in US military: Republicans
No vote this year on gays in US military: Republicans
– Sun Dec 5, 2:01 pm ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The US Senate will not have enough time to vote on lifting a ban on gays serving openly in the military before the end of the year, the Republican opposition leader said Sunday.

"I don't see how we can possibly finish the defense authorization bill, a two-week bill, fully aside from these controversial items in it... before the end of the year," Mitch McConnell told NBC's Meet the Press.

President Barack Obama's Democratic allies have sought to use a lame-duck session of Congress to repeal the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy that bans openly gay men and women from serving in the armed forces.

If the Senate vote is pushed aside by other major legislation -- including efforts to prevent a massive New Year's tax hike and a nuclear arms reduction treaty with Russia -- it is much less likely to pass next year, when Republicans will assume more seats in the chamber.

Republicans oppose repealing the ban, saying it would disrupt military discipline and readiness at a time when US troops are fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

2. And if doesn't this year, and it looks bad next year, then we pursue this in the courts.
I don't fucking care how it's done, this piece of shit policy needs to go NOW.

11. Thanks, sir!
Well, perhaps things aren't so dire....I'm reading that Lieberman wants the Senate to work beyond their recess. So, who knows? It's been such a roller coaster...

Happy holidarys to you and your family! :-)

8. Indeed
We keep doing what we need to to get this POS repealed. The Republicans created this false crisis shit partly because they knew it would keep Congress from a vote to repeal DADT.

3. If the repeal does not pass, Obama better veto the defense bill or drop the court appeal
If one of those three things does not happen, Obama can kiss the gay vote good-bye. I will not be voting for him in 2012. He can spew his lies, promises and bigoted lack of marriage equality support to someone else who will buy it.

He has 2 years to earn it back (well, slightly less than 2 years). It's not looking promising.

7. Republicans are the only people who can get rid of DADT
Only Republicans have the guts to do it (the Dems clearly do not; e.g., the lawsuit brought by the LCRs).

The main reason they are blocking it is that it's something that Obama wants done. You can be sure that if Obama were for upholding DADT, they would move to repeal it.
