Maine Religious Righter: "The Devil Is Campaigning Hard Here" |
|
This fall the religious right in Maine is trying to scare people into repealing our new law which adds sexual orientation to the protected classes under our civil rights laws. A NO vote on Nov. 8th means NO to repealing the law and NO to discrimination.
Hearing the religious righters, you'd think the Devil himself was campaigning for our side. i.e. " 'Buying in to the major premise of the gay rights movement may look like a good and wise thing to do, but it is rooted in the lies and deceptions of the Evil One. Many otherwise thoughtful people, even pastors who should know better and be able not only to reason but to spot the clever deceptions that unthinking people fall for, are falling for the lies. I’ll vote YES on Question One, and I’ll stay on the alert for the one who “prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8 NIV). He succeeded with Adam and Eve, but he failed with Jesus. By the grace of God, I’ll follow Jesus by rejecting the lies of the Evil One.' " - Pastor Sandy Williams, Chairman of YES ON 1.
If you want to stop these people dead in their tracks, go to www.MaineWontDiscriminate.com . Small donations or any other small means of helping is greatly appreciated!

It really hit home for me when my gay daughter did not want to come with me when I went looking for an apartment for us to rent. She was afraid they would not rent to us because she was gay.
I cannot tell you how MAD this mad made me feel. This is the 21ST CENTURY. I suppose these good "christian" people think that a person's sexual orientation should determine what jobs they hold, where they live, etc, etc. Well, NOT IN MY BOOK. If they don't want MY MONEY and MY DAUGHTER, then I say, as a STRAIGHT MOTHER, SCREW YOU.
However, having spent a lot of time Maine when my younger daughter was in college there, I have faith in the good citizens of Maine that they WILL do the right thing.

2. Thanks for the great reply! Hope you can help a little. |

Thanks very much for the great reply! For me, as a new father, I don't want my daughter to grow up in a state that tolerates unfair discrimination in any way. Many of us are working hard on this campaign, but it will be a tough fight as the other side has lots of money and activists and outside help. So we are trying to get the word out far and wide too, as this is very much a national issue. If you haven't already, please visit www.MaineWontDiscriminate.com and see more about the issue, what is happening in the campaign, and how folks can help even in small ways from afar. Any small amount of help is much appreciated. And please help spread the word far and wide. THANKS and all the best to you and yours.

3. These people are nutcases |

and the more ridiculous they sound, the more it seems to me that voters anywhere will see through their deceptive paranoia.

A few months back a local family in my town was sending letters to the local paper calling all gay folk "Children of Satan". I thoroughly rebuked them through a friend who lives in a neighboring state. (My mailbox still gets beaten down every now and then after I rebuked a Pastor under my name in the local paper while defending a pro-gay one.)
