A Single Man: How does a first time director make a film this good?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Single_Man_(film)

To wit: Tom Ford.

I just watched it twice on DVD and am blown away. ( This doesn't happen very often. And that's putting it mildly)

Is it really that easy to make a classic film?

I'd put on my thinking cap, but I'm still scratching my head. I think the son of a gun *wrote* the friggin thing, too.

I'll post this to GLBT , though the film in only coincidentally about homosexuality. I'm thinking more here will have seen it.

I'm speechless.

1. It WAS really good, wasn't it?
Maybe he's a natural...

A good cast certainly helps, but you still need good direction, and good writing first...

I was blown away too.

7. If I'm understanding this, it must have been shut out by Hollywood.
>>>>The film premiered on September 11, 2009, at the 66th Venice International Film Festival and went on the film festival circuit. After it screened at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival, The Weinstein Company picked it up for distribution in the United States and Germany. An initial limited run in the United States commenced on December 13, 2009<3> to qualify it for the 82nd Academy Awards with a wider release in early 2010.<4>>>>

The 82nd Academy Awards took place last Feb.

4. I haven't seen this film yet, but I really want to!
I absolutely adore Julianne Moore, and I will gladly watch anything that she's in. I'm glad you enjoyed the film, and I'm going to put this in my Netflix queue now. Thank you for the reminder!

6. Wonderful movie.
I didn't really think of it as a "gay film." It transcended that. It was about loss, dealing with loss, the pain, the repression, the attempt to move on. The main character happened to be gay, but the emotions were universal.

8. You said a mouthful here:
>>>>The main character happened to be gay, but the emotions were universal.>>>

In fact, the big secret is............................. ALL gay emotions are UNIVERSAL emotions.

But, you're right...... the story could conceivably have been written about a straight guy and worked as well.

11. That was what I was trying
to convey. There is no difference, regardless of what the H8ers may think. Emotions, grief, loss, pain are universal, regardless of sexual orientation.

9. Isherwood packed a lot of great ideas into his writing.
That too may have been a big inspiration.

Complex, beautifully filmed, astounding acting and a profound story. Highly recommended.
