GOP trying to ban motherhood by unmarried women
The real target are GLBTs, but this also impacts hetero unmarried women that want to have children by articifial means. We just got the heads up from the author of an unpublished article in an Indianapolis independent magazine.

Here is the thread in the Indiana forum:

Here is the link to the actual draft legislation:

2. Let them try
this country will laugh them out of town.

Yeah, there are fundies out there, but what, about 25 million in a total voting population of about 130 million? They aren't THAT powerful and I think they have peaked. And even of the fundies there will be many who think this sort of thing is a crock.

One thing, though...I'm not sure the real target are glbts but rather minority women for whom this has an entirely different cultural importance.

3. The bill deals with artificial insemination
only married couples will be able to have children by artificial means.

adoptive parents have to go through.

6. Clearly the target are single women and GLBTs
The rightwing is trying to impose its view that marriage is between a man and a woman, like Michael and Arianna Huffington I presume, and that GLBTs can never be parents, but if they do become parents, the children can be taken away by the state.

This is institutionalized homophobia!

8. There are not that many issues
that would bring me to the streets, but this would. The right to bear children at will, or NOT to bear children at will, is too basic. Without that, nothing else matters.

4. Well, I guess that means we immoral, unmarried women who want
children but don't want husbands will have to just go back to the "Jennie Garp" method of motherhood. (Go to the beginning of John Irving's "The World According To Garp" to get the concept(ion)). Or just stock up on those turkey basters.

What if you want IV fertilization? Would you have to sign a sworn pledge? Show your marriage license? What if you're divorced? What if you're married and want to donate your child to a loving homosexual or lesbian couple? And hey, this doesn't sound very constitutional with regard to reproduction rights whatsoever.

9. Yes, the old turkey baster routine
will come back in favor and that is a shame because I have a friend who went that route and had a child with some serious deficits. I think it is much safer done medically, but I'd sure go that route rather than answer one single question about my sexuality, lifestsyle, etc.

7. Geez, maybe a married lesbian couple from Massachusetts
Geez, maybe a married lesbian couple from Massachusetts should move to Indiana and seek artificial insemination challenging this state law. I'd love to litigate that lovely mess. Or maybe a married gay male couple from Massachusetts should move to Indiana and seek an unrelated surrogate mother to artificially inseminate from one of their sperm thereby challenging this stupid law too.

Or to confuse the begeesus out of them, perhaps a civil union'd couple from Vermont or Connecticut should move to Indiana and seek artificial insemination or a surrogate mother to artificially inseminate. After all, isn't a "civil union" similar to marriage in Vermont and Connecticut and shouldn't they be recognized in Indiana too? *cough*

Talk about litigation . . . how stupid can these fundie idiots in Indiana get? Do these idiots need votes THAT bad that they are willing to spend state taxpayer monies on stupid litigation? How many 100 thousands will it cost in litigation fees for Indiana?

Yup, question answered in the stupidity of this law! Oh, btw, does it have an injunction slapped on it, yet? Another rhetorical question.

The sad part of all of this is that GLBTs are the *new* darling fundie voting-getting magnets on par with abortion-anything. That means anti-GLBT state laws will be attempted chip by chip by chip as are similarly anti-abortion state laws, all for votes and raising campaign funds. Ah, there's money in them thar hills. Unfortunately, it will be costly for the GLBT community and those who support the community, both monetary and emotional cost.

Bigotry for sale, anyone?

19. Scapegoating is lucrative
maybe the litigation should be aimed at making this hate mongering unprofitable?

How about a successfull G or L parenting couple suing for defamation
and for inflicting harm on their children via the unfounded claims of how damaging it is to be reared by anything other than heterosexual breeding pairs?

Sue the heck out of the individuals who make these claims? Pick 'em off one by one?

I can find you some nice experts to research the background of these claims and to show studies that children of gay parent(s) grow up to be normal people.

including my group, http://www.Stoptheamendment.org which is fighting a change to the Indiana Constitution that makes GLBTs second class citizens.

11. Again, though,
WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?

I see the outrage. I just don't see the sense of urgency to get this killed - stomped out and destroyed.

I've emailed this to 5 NOW chapters in IN and I'm now sending this to PFLAG.

Can someone else please help me to get this spread to as many groups as possible??

Can more folks help with this? IndianaGreen and I are working this furiously and it would be great to have some help.

Thanks.

17. Thanks for cross posting
I'm not GLBT, but I have considered assisted reproduction as a single woman. This shit is straight out of "Handmaid's Tale": gestational certificates? It sounds like it came from The Onion, but these people are dead serious.
