New Orleans Must Clean Up Its Gay Image Evangelist Says
Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 04:56 PM by dwickham
Evangelist should piss off big old queer says

http://www.365gay.com/newscon05/10/100405nola.htm

Evangelist Franklin Graham said Tuesday that Hurricane Katrina could lead to a spiritual rebirth of a sinful New Orleans.

Graham, the son and designated successor of the Rev. Billy Graham, said the city's Mardi Gras revelry and ties to voodoo were adverse to Christian beliefs.

"New Orleans has been known for years as a party town," Graham said in an interview with The Associated Press from his office in Boone, N.C. "It is a city that has strong ties to the gay and lesbian movement, and these types of things."

Let's get them out of New Orleans instead.

about the time Billy and his boy Franklin clean up their money-grubbing sleazy image. I'm not holding my breath.

9. Hmmm, Voodoo is adverse to Christian Beliefs.
Well, no shit. It is a different religion. It is the old African religion Voudin. When Christianity was forced on them, many took the Christian symbols (so they wouldn't be killed) and adapt them to their existing religion.

Isn't Mardi Gras based on the Christian religion? The worlds biggest party comes right before the time of Lent? So maybe the problem is too much religion.

Okay, he wants Gays to clean up our image. Everyone polish up your image, and start running for every office available. Time to take back our country.

16. Tourists love the Voodoo culture
I can't begin to tell you how many times I've had to tell people where Marie Laveau's crypt is.

Voodoo is the soul of New Orleans and the entire southern Louisiana area.

As for Mardi Gras, it's celebrated world wide. I'll bet this asshole is praying for major disasters in Brazil, Germany, France, Italy and Haiti, just to mention a few.

24. Mardi Gras and Lent are Catholic-based
And to fundies like Graham, that's not Christianity. They eschew anything that smacks of "papists": Lent, Advent, candles, reverends wearing robes, you name it. Catholics to Talibornagains are just a bunch of Mary- and idol-worshipping folks bound for hell.

I think it only has a "gay image" in the eyes of those fixated on homosexuality.

12. Oh, for crying out loud.....
I spent most of my life in New Orleans, mostly in the French Quarter. The amount of real estate that is owned by gays in and around the Quarter (especially Fauborg Marigny and Treme) is staggering. Are they expecting the gays to sell out? I can't imaging anything so ridiculous to happen. The gays have a long history of moving into economically depressed areas and renovating property, turning entire neighborhoods into high rent districts. They've done this in many cities, and I can personally verify to this in Orlando, Seattle, San Francisco, D.C, and L.A as well. I've done it myself. I'm very handy with a skill saw, thankyouverymuch and I've hung more sheet rock than the vast majority of my male heterosexual friends have.

13. i caught the tail end of an interview with him -
he was saying that he had contacted the WH and told bushole that the FEMA trailers should be given to the churches, and the churches would be the arbiters of who got to live in them and would be the "landlords' of the trailer parks. he looked like he was creamin hisself at the thought of having that sort of power to wield over people. i hate a lyin hypocrical asshole.

18. A very dear friend of mine was a youth in Nazi Germany
He was a child in concentration camps because he was Jewish. I have four video tapes of him being interviewed by Steven Spielberg for his Shoah Project. They're horrifying memories that Joseph never spoke to me about until he agreed to this interview with Spielberg, even though I'd known him for years. When Joseph was freed by the Alliance he was given a choice: convert to Catholicism or starve. Seriously, they wouldn't FEED this skeletal child until he converted!!!

Joseph died in 1999, but I still have those tapes. They were willed to me and I must get them converted to DVD before they deteriorate.

25. That's horrific
But it's something you'll see even today: How many "relief organizations" showed up in Thailand and Indonesia offering food and water IF people attended services? Or the group that tried to airlift children out for adoption to good Christian homes when attempts hadn't been fully made to find relatives who could care for them?

17. They said the same thing about San Francisco after the 1906 quake...
...to which one local wag replied:

If, as they say, God spanked the town
For being over frisky,
Why did He burn the churches down
And save Hotaling's whisky?

Yes, one of the few buildings left standing after the quake and fire (and is still standing on Jackson Street today) was a large whisky distillery and warehouse.

The poem is engraved on a plaque attached to the building's solid, steady walls.

20. Sure am curious why these fundies are so fixated on gays. Makes me think
they MUST be closeted homosexuals themselves. That is the only reason that could explain their incredible fear and fixation...and constant projection of homosexual themes and motives onto everything they see.

Jeez. Sponge Bob Squarepants, the Shark Cartoon, and the "gay" Tinky Winky toon. You have to be REALLY sick to detect gay undercurrents in that stuff.

21. I've been to NOLA dozens of times.......
and I've never thought of it as having a "gay image". People see what they want to see I guess. For instance, I have this image of Franklin Graham being a bigoted, redneck, ignorant, christian fundamentalist and I think he should do whatever he can to "clean up" that image. Maybe my perception is wrong but he won't even consider the fact that HIS perception might be wrong about New Orleans.
Franklin Graham. What the hell did the world do so wrong that it's visited upon by this jackass?

23. Boone, NC's Insurance Rates Are Going To Go Up
Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 07:00 PM by VogonGlory
If I were an insurance company, I'd at least triple or quadruple property damage coverage rates for Boone, NC. I wouldn't do it because I feared "militant homosexuals" but because the sorts of someones who invoke Divine Wrath at other communities for sexual hanky-panky always seem to get some sort of celestial blowback for not adhering to Divine Guidance in other areas.

Anyone else remember Pat Robertson praying for a hurricane to hit Orlando and finding that the big winds found Virginia Beach instead?

Best to mind your own behavior and leave that sort of stuff alone.
