Australian PM: Marriage Equality Against My Upbringing
Australian prime minister Julia Gillard reveals in a new interview that her opposition to marriage equality is based in her old-fashioned upbringing in a “quite conservative family.”

Gillard expressed her views Saturday in an interview with Sky News’s Australian Agenda. Where the push for marriage equality in her country is concerned, she said that she is a “cultural traditionalist” who finds herself “on the conservative side in this question.”

“Declaring there were ‘some important things from our past that need to continue to be part of our present and part of our future,’ Ms Gillard said her view was that the Marriage Act - and marriage being between a man and woman – ‘has a special status,’” reports The Australian.

Gillard, who is an atheist, also said it was important for people to recognize the important role that Bible stories continue to play in the culture.

since many atheists consider the Bible nothing but a book of fairy tales, wonder if the good PM thinks Mother Goose and the Grimm Brothers should play a role in our culture as well?

1. Who is this broad? Where is Kevin Rudd?
And so much for the atheists being all loving and tolerant, eh?

2. She's an idiot on so many levels that it almost feels wrong to
call her a self serving hypocrite, but I will. This woman got elected? She sounds like a poor last minute booking for Real Time more than a world leader. An atheist promoting the Bible, which teaches that women should not be in leadership roles, while being Prime Minister. Insipid.

3. Marriage equality is against my upbringing too.
I was raised in a conservative home with conservative parents and ultra conservative brothers. I was smart enough to see past all the nonsense they told me. I'm a liberal democrat who is in favor of gay marriage. I have been for years even though it doesn't affect me directly. My family still thinks they are going to change my mind.

4. Just LOVE the Pandering to the Religious Reich Down There...
Every time I see the word "Bible" I throw up a little in my mouth.

5. I'm OK with the Bible
It's that "Baah-bull" thing the followers of Jeebus keep raving about that confuses me.

7. FWIW: It's the same book
The only difference is which parts are taken literally.

8. Her pathetic words say she is an atheist, but her commentary and actions say she's a bible
toting, fundamentalist, brainwashed fraud. The bible lol, if all of those who tell us they respect the bible lived their lives exactly as the bible demands (after all this is gods word) imagine just how fast Christianity would nose dive in this country even more than it has already. The crazier they get, the more people choose other ways to worship or stop worshipping all together. People would be burning bibles in piles and running away from churches in teabagging, extremest mobs lol. Give me a break. Who is this person, Anita Bryant's first cousin?

12. Me to PM: I don't care.
That aspect of your upbringing has nothing to do with what's right.
