Stephen McRedmond
McREDMOND, Stephen Age 59 of Nashville, died suddenly at his home on March 28, 2011. He is survived by his cherished partner of 35 years, Matthew Cushing, whom he married in New Hampshire on October 9, 2010. Other survivors include his beloved sisters, Anita McRedmond Sheridan (Mark) of Nashville, Linda McRedmond Orsagh (Dick) of Atlanta, other siblings, many nieces and nephews, and countless loving friends. Stephen was born in Nashville and raised on the McRedmond Farm. He was a graduate of Father Ryan High School and Webster College in St. Louis. As a young man, he lived and studied in Paris, and later in Boston, where he worked at the Museum of Fine Arts. In 1978, he returned to his Nashville roots and devoted his life to family and community, working to preserve the family farm and business, McRedmond Brothers. Stephen was a lover of nature and an enthusiastic supporter of the arts. He served on the Greenways Commission and the Sub-Area Committee of the Nashville Planning Commission. He was a supporter of the Land Trust for Tennessee, the Cumberland River Compact, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, and a leader in the effort to clean up and restore Mill Creek. Stephen was dedicated to preserving Nashville's architecture and heritage. He was widely recognized as a visionary in the rebirth of Germantown and the redevelopment of the Nuehoff site, home to the Jazz Workshop, and other artistic and business endeavors. He was a supporter of the Civic Design Center and the Nashville Cultural Arts Project. He served on the board of Historic Nashville, Inc., Nashville Jazz Workshop, and the Actors Bridge Ensemble. Together with Matthew, Stephen was a tireless supporter of many Nashville charities and civic organizations, including Nashville Cares, Artrageous, the Human Rights Campaign, Room in the Inn, and St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
