questions on corporate / military recruiting at colleges and universities |
|
I got this in my email from someone that is trying to write a paper for his writting class at Michigan Technological University.
I am arguing a pro-GLBT point for my perspectives class.
1. Do you think that organizations/companies that discriminate against GLBT people should not be allowed to recruit on Campus? 2. Do you think that the military should accept people who are openly GLBT? 3. Do you think the military has the right to restrict financial aid to universities/their students that will not allow the military on-campus, as a result of their anti-GLBT policies?
Does anyone know if the issue raised in the last question actually happens or not?

1. No. Anti-discriminatory policies on campuses are there just for this reason.
2. Yes. There is no relevant justification to exclude GLBT people from the military. All arguments in favor of this law (See 10 USC § 654) are vague and based upon impractical logic.
3. No. Financial Aid isn't awarded to the university. The students are the recipients of this award and have the right to choose which college they want to attend. The government should restrict aid to the students because of disliked actions by the school. They are punishing the wrong party.
No. The Solomon Amendment only restricts federal grants and funds to the university by the federal government. It specifically excludes financial aid granted to the student.
