TV Ads Denounce Anti-Gay Texas Amendment

Gay and lesbian rights groups unveiled a series of television ads on Wednesday using same-sex couples to speak against a proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.

The ads, which began airing in the Houston area this week, show local gay and lesbian couples talking about their relationships and their need to have recognized marriages to protect their families in times of illness or death. Some ads also feature the parents of a gay man who is married.

Proposition 2 would amend the Texas Constitution to ban same-sex marriage. It's already banned by state law in Texas and more than a dozen other states.

1. Not enough, not enough

I haven't seen the ad (I am in California after all), but if all we will ever have are white middle-class male couples talking about why they need empathy, forget it.

The parent coverage is a start. But we need people from all walks of life - especially straights who can tell people why the gay marriage ban is wrong, and ethnic minorities from conservative religious traditions (i.e. Catholic Latinos).

Remember, my state passed an anti-marriage measure in 2000, and is poised to rub it into the state constitution next year, largely on the backs of conservative immigrant groups. We need their vote. The gay community status quo will not win it.
