Online site helps heterosexual allies support gay rights
University graduate student Jason Harlacher, who is heterosexual, said he felt awkward at gay pride parades but wanted to do something to show his support. His solution: www.straightsupport.org.

“I started the Web site after finding belief in God,” Harlacher said. “I wanted to take action so people would treat people better. With believing in Christ, the next step you want to take is to live your life by his teaching, to love your neighbor and not judge others, to treat others with love and respect. The Web site is a manifestation of that.”

Harlacher’s site is a place for people to hold forums and read material promoting equality, tolerance and peace. Originally dedicated as an outlet for the heterosexual community to show support for gay rights, the Web site sells “Equality” wristbands for $2 to benefit AIDS research. The site is now dedicated to promoting equality regardless of race, religion, sexuality, gender or nationality.

Students who want to show support for gay rights can find opportunities with the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer Alliance; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Educational and Support Services Program; ASUO Women’s Center; and OUTLAWs: Lesbian and Gay Law Students Association.

1. This is great!
I read a little of it. I have never felt uncomfortable about my total support, belief and work for GLBT rights but I do know people who do. While I may not understand why they are uncomfortable I will direct them to this site. Maybe they will join me after they become comfortable themselves.

FYI, the board I sat on that is now dissolving to become a chapter of our brand spanking new statewide GLBT group, was mostly made up of heteros. One of the things we talked about before this change was finding and nominating more GLBT people. It was in some ways a nice problem to have.

2. That's wonderful news about the Kansas Equality Coalition.
And I'm happy such good things are happening in Kansas ... Just goes to show that Kansans are not all Fred Phelps clones! :)

Best wishes to you and the rest of the coalition, MuseRider! Over here on the Missouri side we are trying to set up a statewide LGBT Democratic caucus.

4. We are so excited!
Good for you.

Are you the person who wrote to me once about how difficult it was to get everyone together and come to consensus or was it someone from Oklahoma? I can't remember but whoever it was is welcome to contact me and I can tell you how it was handled here. It was not easy and was at times extremely painful but we did it because our steering committee was moderated very well.

Good luck to you all. I will be updating as we get underway, we should have a website soon! Go get em Missouri! I know you can do it. We should have a bistate meeting someday.

Now here is an example for all Christians.
