Gay Marriage Bill Gains More GOP Support

Same-sex marriage is now just one vote away from becoming law in New York, as a second Republican in the State Senate broke ranks yesterday to support the measure.

Senator Roy McDonald of Saratoga says he will vote "yes" on a gay marriage bill.

That gives the measure the support of 31 senators, with 32 needed for approval.

"Everybody’s different. Try to get along, try to do the right thing. It’s a difficult vote but I think it’s the right thing to do," McDonald told reporters.

In addition to McDonald, NY1 has learned Republican Senator Mark Grisanti of Buffalo is switching his public position from "no" to "undecided."

Staten Island Senator Andrew Lanza says he is also thinking about the legislation.

While Lanza has been a constant "no" vote on issue, he says he is listening to his constituents.

"This is the first time I find myself in a position where I am struggling with respect to ascertaining what they right thing to do here is," Lanza said.
