New Jersey man charged with bumperstickering
http://www.advocate.com/news_detail_ektid21828.asp

A northern New Jersey man faces hate crime charges for putting an anti-gay bumpersticker on a car. The reason the incident is being treated as a crime is that the car wasn't his.

Gina Genovese is the sole Democrat on the Long Hill township committee. On September 30th, she reported to police that she'd found a bumper sticker on her Lexus SUV, depicting a man, woman and child holding hands, and with a handwritten message protesting gay marriage.

The Daily Record of Bergen County reports crime scene investigators were able to lift a fingerprint off the back of the sticker and run it through the national database. Long Hill Police say the print belonged to George M. Dengler who has been charged with harassment and bias intimidation in the case.

3. If he was already in NCIC, he was arrested at least once before
The national database mentioned in the story is the FBI's NCIC database, a database of fingerprinted criminals.

I wonder what crimes he's already been accused/convicted of?

7. I tend to agree that it sounds over-blown, unless there is more going on

I've had worse things left on MY windshield.

Churches routinely leave nasty "Chic Tracts" on windshields.

In fact, I once spent an hour walking around a parking lot removing Chic tracts that someone had left on about a hundred cars.

Leafleting is an age-old and time-honored method of civil discourse in this country. I'm concerned about the chilling effect it might have as part of the larger picture.

Here's what else I've found:

Gay committeewoman a harassment victim, Long Hill cops charge

Man admits he put same-sex marriage message on her car

DAILY RECORD

Committeewoman Gina Genovese, who is openly gay, said she found the sticker on the front bumper of her sport utility vehicle on Sept. 30 when she arrived at her business, Gina's Tennis World, in Berkeley Heights.

The bright yellow sticker showed a man, woman and child holding hands. On the sticker, Dengler allegedly wrote, "Marriage is for the benefit of children" and "No gay marriage in New Jersey," Genovese said.

<snip>

This is not the first time that Genovese has been harassed.

Long Hill police and the Morris County Prosecutor's Office are investigating a May 25 incident in which about 70 copies of an anonymous letter defaming Genovese were put in town hall. The letter alleged that she was involved in sexual misconduct, Genovese said.

"I'm disturbed by what's going on," she said on Thursday. "It's something that I was somewhat prepared for, but not in the frequency and manner in which I've had to take these blows from various sources.

Again, if that is all there is to it, and if Mr. Dengler is not involved in any other harassing activity, then I hope they drop the matter.

Think about what this means for those of us who need to bypass the right-wing controlled mainstream media filters to get our messages out.

However, if he actually attached the sticker to her car, I think that is an issue.

I wonder what there is to know about Mr. Dengler...
