Poll: Maine Gay Rights Opponents Headed For Defeat
http://www.365gay.com/newscon05/10/102505maine.htm

A new statewide poll shows that a bid to repeal Maine's LGBT civil rights law is likely headed for defeat. The survey, taken for the Bangor Daily News and two television states in the state, found that 56 percent of respondents are likely to vote against the repeal on Nov. 8. Only 42 percent said they would vote for the measure. Two percent were undecided.

The Maine legislature passed the civil rights bill to protect gays, lesbians and the transgendered from discrimination in housing, employment and credit and it was signed by Governor John Baldacci in March (story).

The Christian Civic League of Maine immediately began a repeal effort, gathering enough signatures to force the issue onto next month's ballot.

1. we're sick of this shit......when is over, over?
Us Mainiac's have made it clear that we support civil unions...I hope the CCL get their asses kicked and this is the last time we have to answer the question, yet again.

2. This is one of those issues...
...where people who don't want to appear bigoted lie to pollsters. The actual vote will be closer.

3. more 'what would Jesus do' in action....

It's not 1998 or 2000 anymore, thankfully. I'd guess from a bunch of poll watching that the poll is sufficiently correct. My impression of polls on these issues are that the pro-rights side result tends to be a standard margin of error too high and undecideds are anti-rights or no-shows. That makes for a 53-47 or 54-46 split, which makes the outcome a matter of matching the anti side's turnout rate.
