Star Trek star George Takei comes out
Actor George Takei, best known as Mr. Sulu on the classic TV series Star Trek, comes out of the closet in the new issue of Frontiers. Or rather, as he tells editor Alexander Cho, "it's not really coming out, which suggests opening a door and stepping through. It's more like a long, long walk through what began as a narrow corridor that starts to widen." In the interview, the 68-year-old actor also discusses his childhood in a Japanese-American internment camp, his 18-year relationship, his siblings' inability to accept his homosexuality, and the upcoming Los Angeles production of Equus in which he stars.

2. Better late than never. Darn. Why are the cute guys gay!
He was sure cute in Star Trek. Oh well, I was only a kid then anyway, and Scotty was my favorite, then that Russian guy, then Sulu or Spock toss up, but never the Cap'n.

3. George Takei is gay? Hmmm. . .he still overacts! :)
Maybe someday, some time soon, being gay won't be consider a social stigma. Seriously, who gives a shit if a person's gay? I don't, neither should anybody else.

He's in Equus? Most likely he's playing Dr. Dysart. . .a fantastic role becuase Dysart's at a crisis in his life and his new patient, Alan Strang, only makes Dysart's meltdown that much more brutal on Dysart.

20. You're really on the wrong message board to ask 'who cares?'
Most of us who post he are members of a marginalized group. For us it's a cause for celebration when someone tosses off the shackles of the homophobic/heterosexist dominant society and publicly affirms that he or she is "one of us."

But from your response, I'd venture a guess that you probably wouldn't understand that since you make the assumption in your response that coming out is the same as one's sexuality and sexual exploits. Being gay or lesbian or bisexual or transgender is a matter of identity. It's who we are 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year ... not just whatever small portion of that time we spend engaged in "sexual exploits" - just as heterosexuals aren't just considered heterosexuals during the times they are engaging in sexual exploits with their opposite sex partners.

11. Going where many men have gone before.
Bravo, Mr Takei. Sure - being gay shouldn't even be an issue in the 21st century, but it is. Any public figure who has the self-awareness and - in the god-fearin' USA, at least - the guts to come out gets my vote.

15. Is Mr. Sulu trisexual?
For that matter, how could Mr. Spock be the offspring of a human and an alien?
