A FEW SELF-APPOINTED leaders of the gay rights movement have adopted a controversial doctrine of “you’re either with us or against us.” Unfortunately, “with us” means strict allegiance to a narrow political viewpoint. Those who fail to take the ideological “loyalty oath” are often subjected to scorn, harassment and humiliation.
The particularly vicious practice of making a public spectacle of someone’s sexual orientation, celebrated as “outing” by gay activists, has become the weapon of choice to use against those perceived to be a political enemy.
Easy access to the Internet and the lack of accountability and transparency in cyberspace has increased the number of attacks and their ferocity. Whisper campaigns have been replaced by full-frontal assaults. Personal privacy has become a thing of the past as activists stalk what they hope will be another political “scalp” for the collection.
The perpetrators claim “hypocrisy” as their justification for outing politicians. Elected officials who keep their personal lives private and vote what they believe to be the will of their constituents — despite their own beliefs to the contrary — draw the ire and the fire of these self-righteous partisans.
