Something I don't understand about homophobia
A big reason for hating gays/homophobia is that gay sex =/= procreate. ALTHOUGH THERE ARE BILLIONS OF PEOPLE IN THE WORLD AND THERE ARE SUCH THINGS AS SPERM BANKS.

Discuss.

1. I don't think certain people hate gays because we can't procreate
We really could by using like you said-Being a sperm donor.

I think most people that hate it do so because it's not "normal", or that it "goes against God"

2. Homophobia's really pretty easy to understand.
An experiment at the University of Georgia some years back tested the arousal levels of men exposed to various types of porn. It turns out men who identified themselves as homophobic were more aroused by gay porn than those who were not. Freud was right about that one.

Additionally, many men out there fear gays because they have a dread of being treated the way they treat women.

All the rhetoric around it is just rationalism for the above. The rhetoric is relatively unimportant, since it's acting only to screen both of the above facts from view.

3. I think you hit it on the head
With the male homophobes especially.

17. New Study Links Homophobia with Homosexual Arousal

New Study Links Homophobia with Homosexual Arousal
From The American Psychological Association

August 1996 Press Release

WASHINGTON -- Psychoanalytic theory holds that homophobia -- the fear, anxiety, anger, discomfort and aversion that some ostensibly heterosexual people hold for gay individuals -- is the result of repressed homosexual urges that the person is either unaware of or denies. A study appearing in the August 1996 issue of the Journal of Abnormal Psychology, published by the American Psychological Association (APA), provides new empirical evidence that is consistent with that theory.

Men in both groups were aroused by about the same degree by the video depicting heterosexual sexual behavior and by the video showing two women engaged in sexual behavior. The only significant difference in degree of arousal between the two groups occurred when they viewed the video depicting male homosexual sex: 'The homophobic men showed a significant increase in penile circumference to the male homosexual video, but the control men did not.'

Article: 'Is Homophobia Associated With Homosexual Arousal?' by Henry E. Adams, Ph.D., Lester W. Wright, Jr., Ph.D. and Bethany A. Lohr, University of Georgia, in Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Vol. 105, No. 3, pp 440-445.

4. I think that's just an excuse people use
because they don't want to admit that their homophobia is really based on misogyny and internalized, obsolete notions of "proper" male and female gender roles.

Welcome to DU, by the way! :hi:

15. Right on.
That's why I hate when people believe the Adam and Eve story... Christianity (fundamentalism) is sooo cruel toward women, making them the evil, temptresses. And men are "helpless," yet they need to dominate.

5. I have to chuckle
at the large, manly redstate redneck sucking on a beer in his trailor house, contemplating having sex with his daughter before his wife gets home from her shift at Wal-Mart worrying that a gay couple will move in the trailor next door and jeopardize his marriage.

6. Homophobes are self-hating gays in denial
Is there anything wrong with that? Society shouldn't push people into denial for anything if you ask me. The results are not good.

14. That's true in some cases, but it doesn't explain
straight women who attack gay men but never mention lesbians, and there are a lot of them around.

7. No doubt.
I have no doubt that, for at least some conservatives, this is a part of it. See http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20041122/ap_on_re_us/protecting_marriage_6

Quoting the article
"If those initiatives are part of a broader effort to reaffirm lifetime fidelity in marriage, they're worthwhile," he said. "If they're isolated — if we don't address cohabitation and casual divorce and deliberate childlessness — then I think they're futile and will be brushed aside."
So, to hear this Bryce Christensen tell it, "deliberate childlessness" is some sort of pressing underlying issue in our society.

I guess it's nice to hear it from a horses mouth (mostly because sometimes parts of some conservative's agendas and belief systems seem too odd and extreme to be believed).

9. I think it ties in to their fear that whites will become a minority
in the coming decades if we aren't breeding at proper levels. That basic fear might in part be driving their concern with 'deliberate childlessness'. Which means that these same people will be getting very involved with the hetero's couples decisions on family sizes in the future. It wouldn't surprise me if they start pumping up the rhetoric and provide tax incentives to get the US birthrate for white folk increased. The Nazi's were also concerned with this issue, IIRC.

While I don't doubt that some conservatives see this as a possibility and a threat, I don't hink that's truly what's behind it. I think it just goes back to a Puritanical notion of sex as something sinful to be tolerated only within the context of marriage to produce children as commanded by the Bible. They want society to reflect this religious view. Intentional childlessness implies that any sexual contact will be strictly for fun and thus intentional childlessness in married coouples becomes a corruption of the sacrament of matrimony. Naturally, this applies even more so to gay marriage (or any sort of gay civil union, for that matter) which would thus become doubly abominable to them.

10. human sexuality is not, and never has been, an either/or kind of thing . .
rather, it's a very complex part of our makeup as human beings that exists on a kind of continuum . . .

imagine, if you will, a line extending from 0 to 10 -- 0 being absolutely, completely and totally heterosexual, and 10 being absolutely, completely and totally homosexual . . . everyone is somewhere on this continuum, most closer to the 0, but some closer to the 10 . . . and one's place on the continuum is not static, but can change as one matures and as one's circumstances change . . .

what's most interesting is that, in the entire history of human existence, there has never, ever been anyone who is a 100% pure 0 or a 100% pure 10 . . . everyone has within them the entire range of human sexuality . . . even the most ardent heterosexuals have at least a minute bit of homosexuality in their makeup, and even the most committed homosexuals have at least a little heterosexuality in theirs . . . and therein lies the problem . . .

rather than trying to understand and accept this continuum as part of the human condition, some people -- mostly men -- are so afraid of the homosexual part of their psyches that they lash out against ALL homosexuals . . . they know, at some level, that this part of themselves exists, and it scares them shitless . . . in it's milder form, this fear is manifested as homophobia . . . in it's more virulent form, it can manifest itself as outright homo-hatred . . .

12. It isn't about procreation at all!
It however, has everything to do with the sexual act between two men. (They never speak out against a sexual act between two women, have you noticed that?)

The thought of two men doing to the nasty together really repulses them, or so they tell us.

As for sperm banks, they are AGAINST sperm banks, IVF etc. They really do believe that if God wants a couple to have a child, then God will give that couple a child. If a couple can't have a child, then they shouldn't question God's will!

It really is a no win situation with these people!

For queer hating guys, lesbians are hot. But guys are nasty. Girls (generalization) I've noticed are more accepting.

16. Why fundamentalists should love gays....
If they can't pro-create, then they can't have abortions.

The pro-creation argument is only used because they can't find another so called rational reason to forbid homosexuality. I notice that they don't argue that women and men who can't conceive shouldn't marry.
