Kinky Gay Marriage Backer Runs For Texas Governor
(Fort Worth, Texas) Author and musician Kinky Friedman has opened a campaign office in his quest to unseat Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

Friedman is an Independent and considered a longshot - but the pundits dismissed wrestler Jesse Ventura when he ran for governor of Minnesota in 1998.

Wearing his trademark black Stetson and smoking an illegal Cuban cigar, Friedman cut the ribbon on the campaign office in Fort Worth.

To be an independent candidate on the ballot, he must get 45-thousand-540 signatures between March 8th and May 11th from registered voters who don't cast a ballot in any party primary or runoff.

3. Damn. . .I hope he can find enough signatures
With the wingnuts pushing divorce reforms now, he just might get some traction trashing the hypocrites. And I'm sure Texans care most about morality when its about regulating someone else rather than themselves...

4. Not like he'll win anyway
The Bush family owns that state, and they aren't going to risk holding a free election there anyway. Since anybody but their hand-picked successors are going to lose, why not have a little fun with the process?

6. Don't count him out. He is dead serious. And he will pull big numbers if
he doesn't win the whole thing. Not a doubt in my mind.

Before he's allowed to move into the Governors mansion. Just look what they did to the Kenedys there.

11. Intersting!

Here is a highlight:

Politics
In the early 1980s, Friedman ran a semi-serious campaign for Justice of the Peace in Kerrville, Texas, but lost the election.

In 2004, Friedman began a serious campaign to become the Governor of Texas in 2006. One of his stated goals is the "dewussification" of Texas. Among his campaign slogans are "How Hard Could It Be?" and "Why The Hell Not?" He's hoping to follow in the footsteps of other entertainers-turned-governors, including Jesse Ventura, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Ronald Reagan. When the campaign finance reports came out after the second quarter had ended, Friedman shockingly outraised former Democratic Congressman Chris Bell.

Friedman is friends with both Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, both of whom have invited him to visit the White House. He wrote about his friendships with them in his November 2001 column ("Hail to the Kinkster") for Texas Monthly.
