New Zealand Passes Gay Unions Law

Gay and lesbian couples in New Zealand will be able to register their unions and receive many of the same rights and benefits as married couples under legislation passed today in Parliament.

The new law doesn't go far enough for most gay activists who sought full marriage rights, and for religious conservatives the bill went too far. Nevertheless gays generally supported the legislation, seeing it as a transition on the route to full marriage. Conservatives fought tooth and nail to kill the bill.

Dozens of amendments that would have emasculated the legislation were proposed by the opposition in Parliament only to be voted down.
