Israel To Recognize Same-Sex Couples
http://www.365gay.com/newscon04/12/120804israel.htm

Israel has announced it will give limited rights to same-sex couples.

Attorney General Menahem Mazuz has directed government offices that the government now will recognize same-sex couples for monetary and property issues.

The decision reverses a legal opinion by his predecessor, Elyakim Rubinstein, that gay and lesbian couples cannot be sanctioned under Israeli law.

bet this is gonna get some of the fundies there in an uproar

4. Well yea, but
those of the Taliban (both here and abroad) don't even read the book they claim guides them in their decisions. They use a sick twisted interpertation that suits their needs when they need them.

5. Rooted in the Old Testament?
Modern Israel was never rooted in the Old Testament. It is a modern secular state, despite having official rabbis.

Most Israelis are not religious at all. Sharon is an atheist.

"Jewish" is a nationalistic thing in that country. There's no separation of church and state USA style, but church isn't state in Israel.

8. It is
Have you ever been? When they set up the laws of Israel, they took the British laws that were on the books and molded them to fit with Jewish Law.

All Judges, lawyers, and anyone who walks into a courtroom must wear kippot (yarmulkes). The Supreme Court Library is not only filled with "secular" law books, but also the Jewish-religious law books.

Although you are right that it is a modern secular state, it is still based in Jewish law...

6. That's why the FReepers are ignoring it
The fundies think that Israel was founded by God, and that He still guards it (American military aid has nothing to do with it); so gay-unions there don't fit into the grand-plan - as such they to be ignored.

9. Israel is much more liberal
It never ceases to amaze me how little people actually know about Israel politics Israeli a vibrant Socialist state that has some of the best state supported health care. Gays have reach senior ranks in the Israel Military

7. Question at next presidential press conference (in 2006 at his rate)
"Mr. President, now that Poland and Israel allow gay marriage and Saudi Arabia has passed civil unions as of January 2006, do you still believe your position on gay rights is in the mainstream?" :D

10. Marrige issues are DEFINATELY religious in Isreal
For instance, if two Jews want to marry, one of whom is not Jewish according to Orthodox standards, then they must leave the country for the marrige, but it is recongized when they return.

Seeing how Reform Judaism already marries gays, and Conservative is considered to being close to doing so, it is likely that this decision will stand.

Note, for citizenship/immigration purposes you can be a Jew from any denomination, to get married you have to be Orthodox.
