(Boston, Massachusetts) "I don’t want to alarm you, but was your signature stolen?" That is the beginning of an automated telephone message that is going out to thousands of homes throughout Massachusetts.
The calls to 10,000 people, along with letters to another 14,000, warn that they may have unwittingly signed petitions calling for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.
Vote On Marriage, an umbrella organization made up of the Catholic Church and conservative Protestant groups, submitted the signatures to Secretary of State William Galvin a week ago. The number was nearly double the 65,825 signatures required.
The petitions were certified by Galvin and the names became public property.
The telephone and mail campaign is being funded by MassEquality, an organization which advocates for same-sex couples and is one of several efforts underway to verify that all of the signatures are legitimate.
