Friday, January 6, 2006 / 02:43 PMA gay couple was tossed out of a Los Cabos resort hotel for sharing a kiss in the pool, Reuters reports. According to the wire service, Gerardo Eliud and Samir Habdu told police they were roughed up by security and thrown into the street with their bags last month after what Eliud described as an innocent gesture of affection.
"It was a two-second kiss," he said. "We didn't even touch lips."
The incident at the Hotel Presidente InterContinental caught the attention of Mexican lawmakers, who tried to bring the matter to Congress. According to the wire service, conservatives rejected the demand for a public investigation into the affair and buried the request from left-wing representatives. The matter will be analyzed by a legislative commission, Reuters said.
According to hotel administrators, the Mexico City residents were evicted for soliciting other guests, a scenario the hotel says is backed by witnesses and documents. But Eliud said that when he and his partner asked why they were being evicted, a security guard told them it was because "we do not like faggots." The men, both Mexican citizens, have filed a criminal complaint against the hotel and have been in touch with the national Human Rights Commission.
"This can happen to anyone," Eliud said. "Many people keep quiet or don't say anything for fear of being in the press. We want this not to happen to anyone else, and we want justice to be done."
The hotel is situated on the tip of the Baja California peninsula, not far from Cabo San Lucas. According to Reuters, the men picked the InterContinental because of its gay-friendly policies, policies that were confirmed to the newswire by hotel spokespeople. The Los Cabos hotel pays a fee to the British owners of the InterContinental chain for the right to use the brand name.
