Fred Phelps to protest Lonnie Latham at South Tulsa Baptist Church Feb 5th
Edited on Mon Jan-09-06 12:17 PM by IanDB1
I wonder what "God Hates Fags" Phelps thinks of Rev. Lonnie Latham?

Isn't it fun when anti-gay bigots turn on their own?

Judge Not Lest... lest... lest what? Oh, yeah. "Lest ye be judged yourself."

Looks like Latham is being judged by Phelps now.

Shame, isn't it?

2. Since the guy is gone
(I heard the deacons told him to resign or be fired), how is picketing his church going to help? On the other hand, maybe it will cause some of the congregants to realize that hate isn't a Christian value?

3. this asshole
picketed outside my Episcopalian church a year or so ago when the EC ordained it's first openly gay bishop. Now for the most part my hometown is small and small minded but my congregation surprised me when they were pretty uniform in denouncing this asshole. Still - denouncing the big assholes is easy - it is the everyday asshole-bigot that is hard to stand up to

4. Phelps tends to have the opposite of his desired effect
He creates more sympathy than hate, except in the most virulent of people.

5. Phelp's only agenda is his own publicity.
He would picket anything to make the news. His outfit is just a sick little cult, and is a best a bizarre caricature of ordinary evangelical right-wingers.

6. Someone is eventually going to beat the fuck out of Phelps.
This man works on behalf of Satan. He is an agent of his true hero, the devil.

Aside from attacking gays, he pickets Iraq soldier funerals....forcing kids to hold signs saying "Thank God for IED's and dead soldiers."

He couldn't be happier about the deadly mine accident in West Virgina or the devastating situation in New Orleans or any other disaster....just check out his pathetic website.

Anyway, I don't advocate violence, but lets put it this way:

If someone were to beat the fuck out of Phelps and teach that piece of filth a lesson about spreading hate and despair, my reaction would most likely be in the form of a yawn like who the hell gives a shit. ;)

8. Pastor resigns after arrest for seeking lewd behavior

<snip>

Critics of the Southern Baptist Convention have seized upon Latham's arrest to attack Christians in general for hypocrisy. Others, like the homosexual group Soulforce, have attacked the SBC's position that homosexuality is a sin.

In a press release, Soulforce spokespersons called the SBC "anti-gay" and accused Southern Baptists of causing homosexuals to live a "dark and secretive double-life" that causes "this kind of needless suffering."

Chapman addressed various criticisms that have been aired in the media.

"Obviously, this news has brought negative attention to the Southern Baptist Convention and Baptists in Oklahoma," Chapman said. "It has opened the door for those who seem to relish the failure of any Christian. It has given an opportunity for those who will to seize the moment to mock the Christian heritage to which Lonnie has testified through the years.

"Regardless of what others may say," Chapman continued, "the failure of one does not negate the witness of many faithful Christians to the power of Jesus Christ in their lives. The hypocrisy of a messenger does not compromise the integrity of the message. The Bible is no less true than it was a week ago or years ago. It continues to offer hope to all who will believe, including Lonnie and the rest of us."
