JACKSONVILLE (FBC)–The images flashed on the screen are startling: Two men jubilantly kiss each other; a robed minister signs a marriage license for a male couple; a beaming man drapes his arm amorously around another man’s shoulder; two women hug at the obvious conclusion of their nuptials. And on each, the caption reads: “Gay marriage became legal in Boston May, 2004.”
The images featured in a power point presentation confronted and shocked members of First Baptist Church of Malabar in recent weeks, motivating them to sign petitions in support of the Florida Marriage Protection Amendment, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman.
Exploding on the screen during worship, the visual display of affection between same-sex couples “reminds us of what we are really up against and brings it home to our folks,” explained Pastor Dan Wilkerson. “This issue is foundational to our culture and who we are as a people. It seems like a no-brainer to me.”
For weeks, the Malabar church staff had encouraged members to sign the marriage amendment petitions– speaking on the issue from the pulpit, placing information in bulletins and even handing out petitions at the door following worship.
