Utah Gays Call Boycott Over 'Brokeback Mountain' Ban
http://www.365gay.com/Newscon06/01/011106brokeback.htm

The GLBT Community Center of Utah is calling for a boycott of businesses owned by Larry H. Miller Holdings after it cancelled plans to show "Brokeback Mountain" at one of its theaters.

Miller, a prominent Mormon and one of the state's richest men owns a number of car dealerships, movie theaters, the NBA Utah Jazz and dozens of other companies.

In a call to action the center calls on Utah gays to "make a concerted effort to put your money to work."

Despite placing ads in local newspapers for "Brokeback Mountain" moviegoers last Friday night discovered that the film was not on the bill at the Megaplex 17 at Jordan Commons owned by Miller. (story)

1. Hopefully it'll make a difference
I can't see how a person like Miller could be made to change their mind on an issue like this, but at least people will know where *not* to spend their money.

2. The GLBT Center folks have it right, and it would be just great if
several straight folks announced similar boycotts.

If Mr. Miller wants to censor art then consumers should insist that he pay a penalty for such an un-American and cowardly act. What a spineless dolt he must be to remove from regional consideration a landmark film.

3. Will they put a new clean picture in its place?
Wonder where they would find one?

4. This boycott may deserve notice beyond the GLBT forum.
As a straight, I'd support it if any of Miller's businesses are near me in CA. I wouldn't even have seen this thread except that it happened to be on the "latest" page when I looked there.

5. Can I harm his business from here?
How?

Can I tie up his phone lines so he can't DO business?

Post a number. These religious fuckwads* needs to be stopped.

6. Yes, a great use of resources
Let's lobby hard to make sure that the production company makes an even bigger profit -- because a bunch of gay guys seeing the movie in a Mormon-owned theatre is sure to make a huge difference versus, say, lobbying the state government for equal partnership rights. Yay!
