Canada: 150 anti-same-sex marriage candidates outed

Globe and Mail Update

A coalition headed by a former Liberal MP has announced its endorsement of roughly 150 candidates in the federal election who support a restoration of the traditional definition of marriage.

Independent MP Pat O'Brien split with the Liberal caucus last year over his opposition to how the party redefined the definition of marriage to include same-sex couples. He is spearheading the bipartisan Vote Marriage Coalition, along with former Conservative MPs Grant Hill and Elsie Wayne, both known for their strong stands against same-sex marriage.

"Each candidate we endorse has taken a stand and given clear indication of supporting marriage as a legal union between one man and one woman in the next Parliament," Mr. O'Brien said in a statement Tuesday. In all, the coalition is endorsing roughly 150 candidates across the country, he said, and their names can be found on the coalition's website.

Surprisingly, some members of the gay and lesbian community think that Vote Marriage is doing Canadian voters a service by outing candidates who have not made their stance on same-sex marriage known.

2. same old shit
how is marriage "redefined"?

really.

When you marry the opposite sex (presumably someone you love), it's a traditional marriage.

When you marry the same sex it's a non-traditional marriage. These premises have not been redefined by laws that expand who can get married, and people who believe it might as well believe that one plus one doesn't equal two if one of them isn't hetero. The math still works regardless.

Both goverment recognized marriages are "civil" marriages, which are defined not by animal husbandry, but by joint ownership of property and inheritance, medical and shared tax and debt liability as well as shared responsibility for dependents.

These animal husbandry advocates are actually harmful to progress.
