Lesbian Named UC Chancellor

Denice Dee Denton, the dean of the University of Washington's College of Engineering, has been named chancellor of the University of California-Santa Cruz, south of San Francisco.

UCSC has 10 campuses. In the 1960s the school was a bastion of hippies and anti-war protestors. Today it considered one of the country's leading research universities.

Denton was selected from a list of 700 academics. It is not known if she is the first lesbian to hold the position of chancellor at UCSC, but at 45 she is the youngest person to lead the university.
