Brokeback Mountain VS. End Of The Spear
The "gay" movie and the "Christian" movie.

They faced off at the box office this weekend.

And how did they do?

Brokeback took in roughly 7.4 million in its 7th week in release.

End of the Spear took in 4.2 million in its DEBUT WEEKEND.

Both films were playing in roughly the same number of theatres (Brokeback - 1196, End of the Spear - 1163)

The religious rightwingers and the freepers were full of predictions that the American public is thirsting, panting for conservative "Christian" entertainment, and that no one in the "heartland" would EVER go to a "gay cowboy" flick ("they're SHEEPHERDERS, dammit!)

Well, freepers, look at the numbers and deal with reality.

Things ain't going your way, are they?

2. They'll probably use that as an excuse as to why the movie
didn't open so well.

3. Check out the reviews for End of the Spear
It's gotten REAMED by most mainstream reviewers who found the story fascinating but the film utterly awful, with bad writing, hamfisted directing, cutting with an axe, and general mawkishness covering the whole effort like a layer of sickly sweet caramel.

It's really a pity the story hadn't been done by competent people. The story would have made a truly great film if a bunch of no talents with a big budget gained from televangelism and megachurches hadn't ruined it.

4. in my pinkish purple city, the BBM theatre was FULL yesterday
Several weeks in, it's still going strong, and we used to be the only Democrats on our block (that has changed markedly however).

Of course, there's the factor that Brokeback is a brilliant, beautiful film and "End of the Whatever" is a hokey piece of Godophilia.

7. I love the comments in this one review of "End of the Spear"
But filmmakers don't need stories with a religious agenda any more than they need ones with an irreligious one. They don't need stories with any agenda, frankly.

They just need good stories.

Ratings note: The film contains violence and nudity.

Note how the wingnuts are always whining that any gay movie is trying to promote the "Homosexual Agenda". Isn't it nice that reviewers clearly see that their movies are nothing but a vehicle for the Religious Agenda. Also of note is that the movie contains nudity, which they are always ballyhooing about whenever it shows up anywhere in Hollywood--except in their own movies it would seem. :eyes:
