America Moves Further Right On Gay Marriage
http://www.365gay.com/newscon04/12/121504marriagePoll.htm

In the aftermath of the November election there are growing signs America is moving further right. The Republican Party says the number of registered Republicans has grown "substantially" and a new poll shows that Americans overwhelmingly reject both same-sex marriage and benefits for gay couples.

The national poll by Quinnipiac University in Camden, Connecticut, shows that nearly two thirds of those surveyed oppose same-sex marriage. When asked if they would support civil unions 51 percent said no, while 45 would allow them.

However, when it came to amending the U.S. Constitution to ban same sex marriage 53 percent said it was not necessary. Several polls prior to the election showed that the divide over gay marriage was much narrower and that there was general support for providing at least some benefits to same-sex couples.

and thank the gods we didn't wait for popular opinion to come around on civil rights back in the 1950s and 1960s or else we still wouldn't have inter-racial marriage in some states and people would still be sitting in the back of the bus

sorry if this offends anyone but fuck popular opinion and these polls--if our so-called leaders depend on these polls for their stances, then we are all screwed

1. i really hate it when people talk about the "activist judges"
going against popular opinion. i just want to fucking slap them and say "look, they aren't there to do what the majority wants them to, they are there to protect the right of the minority! got it?!"

plus, i haven't looked at the polling data, but from what i've seen the polls don't mean shit. who did they ask? did they balance it for the number of men vs. women who they asked? how was the question phrased? there are so many little variables when dealing with these polls that could effect the outcome that most of them are just worthless.

2. They forget that it was "activist judges"
who protected African Americans' civil rights...as in Brown v. Board of Ed, for instance.

3. The term "activist judges" is used when the outcome of a case is
disliked. PERIOD. For example, do you hear radical rightwingnuts say that Bush v. Gore is an "activist judge" decision? And you cannot get more "activist judge" than that decision!

The term is used to pander to the uninitiated and unknowledgeable in law in order to push a political agenda.
