Congratulations Amelie Mauresmo for winning the Australian Open
I am a big tennis fan and have been rooting for her to win a grand slam since 1999 when she was maligned for being gay. She is one of the nicest most considerate players ever. Too bad Justine was to ill to have finished out the match.

Third seed Amelie Mauresmo won her first grand slam tennis title when former champion Justine Henin-Hardenne retired from the Australian Open women's singles final because of injury today.

For those who don't follow tennis.

Henin aiming for fifth major title, Mauresmo hoping to make it Grand Slam title number 1

In 1999, Mauresmo was 19, had just emerged on the tennis scene and had created a stir by being openly gay. She was caught up in a minor scandal when Hingis reportedly said in German that the strong, athletic Mauresmo was “half a man.” Hingis denied making the comments, but they were widely reported and Mauresmo later admitted it had been a distraction. The 26-year-old French woman says her tennis and her attitude have been through a thorough evolution since.

1. I was also very happy to see her
for a lot of reasons. She was playing top notch tennis, has been for a while but this Open she was amazing. The other part was because of what she went through when she came out because of those awful comments. It is too bad she won this way, she was going to win but it could have been more fun for her. Whatever, she has earned this in many ways and I am very glad to see her win.

2. Congratulations Amelie!
Ive been following her career for years myself, also a huge tennis fan.

Im ecstatic that she finally has a slam under her belt, and is it wrong of me to want to slap Justine Henin for robbing her of her 'jumping up and down' moment??

3. No.
To have her moment of glory be tainted because her opponent and I quote "Ran out of gas" is appalling.

11. Justine Has Played Hurt Enough...
...that normally I'd be inclined to trust her judgement, but that she threw the towel in when she was being totally DESTROYED made me smell a rat, so I'd throw a whack or two in there too! :spank:

4. It was too bad Henin was injured because they both play so well.
I was glad to see Amelie win.

She's a beautiful player.

6. Congratulations! She was playing phenomenal tennis throughout
the tournament...she was sort of under the radar...while the other women were winning, sometimes with difficulty, she was trouncing her opponents. Too bad Justine quite, but Amelie was rolling anyway.

7. I'd equate this

to Jesse James' triumph at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

Adolf Hitler, who hosted the Games to demonstrate the superiority of the white race, was humiliated by Jesse James.

Likewise, homophobic John Howard was humiliated by Amelie Mauresmo.

Congrats to Amelie - and shame on you, Howard.

Now, if Amelie could repeat this performance at the US Open, I'd be ecstatic.

8. Did You Notice, Ally McLesbian...
...that this afternoon there was hardly a mention of Amelie's victory?

GEE, you don't think our corporate owned, bush ass kissing news media may have wanted to downplay the victory of an openly gay French woman now, do you?

9. Somehow...
Australian Open in itself isn't as newsworthy as the other three Grand Slam titles anyway, because of time zone issues.

But you definitely have a point.

10. Thanx, Ally!
Love your sig line. Did she say that when the show went off the air or when they accused her of being Anorexic (while they were simultaneously accusing Alicia silverstone of being fat) ?

12. Calista Flockhart said it...

not as part of Ally McBeal, but when she was on Letterman in 2000.

And Ally has all the marks of closet lesbianism.

Thanks! :)
