hubby & I just saw Brokeback Mountain - such a wonderful powerful film
It was heartbreaking and so beautiful...
oh Ennis, Ennis, Ennis -

I was worried that after all the hype I would feel let down by the movie.... but Heath Ledger was absolutely brilliant! it is simply a masterpiece.

4. Great - honestly, I was a little shocked when my 13 year old son
said he wanted to see it. But then again, he's "MY" son, so I shouldn't really be surprised by his request.;-)

5. I am a little surprised too by any 13 year old boy
wanting to see a love story. I am glad he does though. I think Ledger will win an Oscar for this and he certainly deserves one.

3. i thought i was going to have an ''out of africa'' experience.
but the movie knocked me off my feet.

full of content -- some really wonderful camera work -- the acting was everything you could want.

please read the short story if you haven't -- it'll take 10 or twenty minutes to read it altogether -- but take time to read it twice, because annie p chose every word precisely -- and you can really admire how larry mcmurty ''filled out'' the story.

it's ten bucks and change on amazon.

6. Instead of just the short story, I would recommend....
Brokeback Mountain: Story To Screenplay

This includes Annie Proulx' short story, the original screenplay written by Larry McMurty and Susan Ossana, and a short essay by the three authors about the story and the work involved in getting the movie made.

Also, any of Annie Proulx' works are highly recommended. She has one or two novels out, but her biggest strength is the short story. Very spare writing, every word chosen for a reason, one of the better authors I've read in a long time.

22. she's a true word-smith.
i agree -- she chooses every word specifically -- and it's worth reading more than once for that reason.

yes i read your other posts -- i think it was you -- where you said you had gottn the screen play to go with.

that was a good idea.

15. Just wondering...
What is an "Out of Africa" experience? Not being sarcastic, just curious.

23. when 'out of africa'' came out -- it heavily hyped
a great movie -- isaac dineson and all that.

wellll -- here i get to the movie -- and it's a very aenemic story with gorgeous, gorgeous photography.

isaac dineson's life is incredible! worthy of a great movie -- this was a far cry.

so that's what i thought i might be getting -- all pretty and no substance.

i've never been so happy to be disappointed.

8. My daughter and I saw it...we both loved it.
She did remark that it would have been nice to see the movie without knowing the basic plot. It would have distracted less from the initial part of the movie establishing the relationship between Ennis and Jack.

That said, we both want to see the movie again. It's an amazing character study and and the characters are three dimensional people you care about...

I think it will be a timeless, classic film. MKJ

9. i asked hubby for a copy when it comes out on video
but i confess to wishing for a different ending - for the two men to have grown old happily together on a little ranch....

wonderful story, beautifully realized on film.

24. Saw it yesterday.....
And I was really surprised at first that it's playing in my small town of 15,000 people. College town and also a vacation area, so maybe that has something to do with it. The theater was almost full at the 3:50 pm show, and I was surprised to see a lot of older couples there. There was a fair share of dykes and queers (me and my partner included!) but also college students and just a mix of people. The movie is beautiful and emotional, and I agree with another poster who said she would have liked a better ending, but really the way it ends has much more impact this way. I need to read the story next! Overall I was quite impressed, and still thinking about it this morning.

11. And neither of you turned gay, right?
I hear that in Utah people can change their sexual orientations just by watching a movie.

14. King Kong turned a priest into a child molester
He went inside a Man of God.

But in the middle of the movie, he molested a child he'd never met.

Priest charged with groping teen during 'King Kong'

MARBLE FALLS, Texas (AP) — A Roman Catholic priest accused of groping a 16-year-old boy at a movie theater during a showing of "King Kong" has been charged with indecency with a child by sexual contact.

Father Paul M. Clogan, 74, was arrested Friday as he left the theater, police Capt. F.T. Goodwin said in Monday's online edition of the Austin American-Statesman. Clogan was free on bond Monday.

Clogan sat next to the teen in the theater, Goodwin said. The boy, who did not know Clogan, told investigators the priest groped him about an hour after the movie started.

Clogan was serving at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Horseshoe Bay. He has been removed from active ministry until the case is resolved, Austin Bishop Gregory Aymond said.

18. Oddly...I didn't cry, but...
...I think it's because I was so stunned by how utterly moving the story was. It exceeded my expectations and haunted me for days.

19. I'm constantly amazed at how many straight people like BBM
I guess that's why they call it a "mainstream" movie.

I have to confess I prefered the short story because I could relate to it easier without the tacked on subplots. I wish the film version had focused a bit more on Jack and Ennis because I didn't feel the same chemistry between them that I felt in the story ... but I'm sure the expanding of the story made it more of a story for everyone and not just a film that could be dismissed as "gay."

Still, I'm glad to see so many straight people that were moved by the film.

25. many older married couples were at the show I went to
senior citizens. THAT suprised me. i'm a straight married gal and i loved the film but to see married folk in their 70's and up at the theater and hear them afterwards talking about how much they loved it - wow!

i think there will be a backlash against the xtian fundie-taliban over their anti-gay anti-tolerance positions. i truly believe more americans feel it is a matter of equal rights. i believe we will see gay marriage accepted as norm - just like interfaith and interracial marriage is now - in my lifetime.

20. I finally got to see the movie this evening.
It was better than I could have imagined. It has been showing here for about 3 weeks & the place was still almost filled. Thats saying alot since I live in a heavily red area.

One part of the movie actually brought me to tears. I recommend it to everyone!
