'Brokeback Mountain' Gets 8 Oscar Nods
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060131/ap_on_en_mo/oscar_nominations

The cowboy love story "Brokeback Mountain" led the Academy Awards field Tuesday with eight nominations, among them best picture and honors for actor Heath Ledger and director Ang Lee.

Also nominated for best picture were the Truman Capote story "Capote"; the ensemble drama "Crash"; the Edward R. Murrow chronicle "Good Night, and Good Luck"; the assassination thriller "Munich."

...

Along with best-actor contender Ledger, and directing nominee Lee, "Brokeback Mountain" scored nominations for Michelle Williams as supporting actress, Jake Gyllenhaal as supporting actor and Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana for their screenplay adaptation of Annie Proulx's short story.

1. I think "Brokeback Mountain" will walk away with a slew of Oscars.
Including Best Picture.

About what I expected, nominationwise. Excellent choices this year. :-)

4. I agree.
I think Brokeback will win Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Cinematography.

As for the other four categories Brokeback was nominated in, my choices are:

Best Musical Score will be John Williams for either Munich or Memoirs of a Geisha.
Best Supporting Actress will be Rachel Weisz.
Best Supporting Actor will be George Clooney.
Best Lead Actor will be Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

6. I think all your choices are on the money but one.....
I love Clooney, but I think Gyllenhaal was take Supporting Actor. Just a hunch, but so far his work in BBM has not gotten the recognition it deserves.

7. That's what I keep saying...
...but is anybody listening? Oh well. Their careers are going to be long and varied, so there'll be plenty of chances for Jake.

8. First time I saw it, I could barely look away from Ledger. The second
time though, I really focussed on Gyllenhaal and he is superb. But,as you say, they both have decades to go.

12. i'm not telling you something you don't know -- but
alot of oscars are given to someone for a picture they did another time -- that may happen for gyllenhall or ledger this time around.

i.e. clooney and hoffman get the nod this time -- and the others a nod another though the intention maybe for brokeback.

Despite the evil one and his minions, the tide of social change cannot be stopped.
And to quote another great song, "Hey people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together try and love one another right now..."

(on edit:) But don't forget to take your outrage to the streets when necessary...

5. A lot..but not the double digits some front-runners get...
...could have gotten for editing and other categories. Still, can't see it not winnning Best Picture and director...the competition just isn't there.

Surprised Jake was in supporting category. He was in that category for SAG, and the way SAG is run, the organziation decides what category to put actors in. But you choose for the Oscars, so he probably decided he had a better shot there.
