Blast from the past... from an old Jet Magazine I was leafing through
while doing some housecleaning. (Mods, I beg you for a little leeway on the 3-4 paragraph rule as I wanted to share this but I'm unaware of any weblink; plus, I'm typing this out from the original issue. Thanks.)

Judge Reserves Ruling On Homosexual Marriage (from Jet Magazine, Dec. 26, 1974, pg. 20)

Can two homosexuals who were wed in church have their marriage registered in a town's vital statistics bureau?

The recorder of the Manitoba, Canada, Vital Statistics Dept. refused to register the marriage of Richard North, 22, and Chris Vogel, 26, because "it was not valid." The couple sued.

Chief Judge A.R. Philp (sic) of Winnipeg County Court reserved his decision in the case until later.

Marvin Samphir, counsel for the Manitoba Attorney General's Office, said "the government has no ax to grind in the case. However, we cannot register this marriage because it does not fit the accepted definition of marriage."

Said April Katz, attorney for the couple: "Marriage documents do not specify the sex of the people who fill them out."

2. Jet could be gossipy but occasionally they hit on some hot stories
Certainly, they had a competant news section; I, of course, being a kid, flipped over that "boring stuff" and went for the Jet Top 20 song list.

Interestingly, before the concept of "coming out" became en vogue, I do remember first reading in Jet about Johnny Mathis stating that he was gay, and this again was way back when.
