HRC update...
I'm still debating whether to stop my donations. Hilary Rosen is my sworn enemy (suing 12-year-olds and propping up the corporate behemoth that is the music industry kinda rubs me the wrong way), but if they're going to stick to the cause without compromise, I'll keep sending them cash.

Anyway, the email I got:

Dear (me),

As we all prepare for the holidays, we hope you find time to read and reflect on this week's update from HRC. Please feel free to share it with family and friends.

Have a good weekend,
HRC Partners Program

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Happy Holidays,

Almost 20 years ago, I was the first lobbyist of what was then the Human Rights Campaign Fund. I also spent many years as board leader of this amazing institution. Now at the request of the board, it's amazing to be back at HRC to help co-lead this incredible team to ensure we don't miss a step in this transition period.

While change is never easy, the most important constant of HRC is its smart and savvy staff, boards, and volunteers. Thank you all for your hard work and dedication – it shows.

As the year winds down, and everyone looks forward to a holiday break, I want to take a minute and put a few old issues to rest while giving you a snapshot of the year ahead.

First, let me be clear that our long term goals remain intact. Tactics adapt, goals do not. We remain committed to marriage equality. It is the optimal protection for our families and our support is unwavering. At the same time, we know we will face another FMA attack that we must defeat. And in Congress, we believe there may be opportunities to craft some real benefits and protections that are now denied to us.

We’ve come out and now we must come together. Decades of telling our friends and family who we are brought us understanding and support. Now we need these allies to take the next step and join us in town hall meetings and in the halls of our state houses and in Congress.

We must keep reminding Corporate America that equality works. HRC will expand and re-launch its workplace organizing project, and maintain the momentum in GLBT workplace equality. You may have already seen a sample of this effort in our Holiday Buyers Guide, which is available at www.hrc.org

We must engage in a thoughtful new dialogue with communities of faith. For too long, a vocal minority of far-right religions have portrayed their narrowly crafted views as the true beliefs of all Americans of faith. We know that there are GLBT people of faith, and many allies who sit next to us in the pew and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with us in our struggle for equality. We must ensure that those voices are heard too, and seek their help in changing hearts and minds.

Finally, We will reintroduce the face of GLBT America to America. HRC can and will take a leadership role in telling our stories and sharing our lives across the country. We need Americans to understand that when we have no access to a lifetime of workplace savings, our seniors face an uncertain future, or that our children are the ones hurt by our inability to be legal co-parents. Our stories are real, they're poignant and they represent the hopes and fears of all Americans. We must get these stories out.

These are the broad strokes. There's much more to come. We are counting on all of you to help us draw the distinctions and shape the future. At HRC, we believe the future of GLBT America is bright. Happy Holidays and thank you again for all that you do on behalf of all of us.

Hilary Rosen
Interim Director

1. Utter crap
They're trying to position their DLC-Log Cabin takeover as "good news." And they slandered Cheryl Jacques to the utmost and are now talking about "compromising" with anti-gay legislators like Arlen Specter.

2. That's exactly what I thought.
Spend your money elsewhere, people. The HRC is NOT our friend.

3. Well, that's 2-0.
2 negative, 0 positive.

Can't say I'm surprised. I think I've been in denial about HRC for a while, because I really thought they had the potential to become a very influential organization; that equal sign is some of the best branding I've ever seen. Anyway, it's too bad. Looks like my money's going elsewhere.

5. Yes, support the Task Force
They were on the ground in every one of the 11 states facing anti-gay marriage legislation. My partner and I are big donors to NGLTF and I sent HRC a scathing letter explaining why we would not be giving them any money. I got a tepid reply in which they claimed that they have been lied about in the press.

My ass....

7. Got the same email...
...and we will NOT be renewing our membership in HRC. Instead, we'll continue our support of Lambda Legal, NGLTF, GLAAD, and similar local groups.
