Fewer Than Expected Register For U. Fla. Domestic Partner Plan

Only 25 University of Florida employees have registered for the school's domestic partner health benefits plan - far fewer than the 120 that had been expected.

Enrolment in the health plan ended on Friday. The program includes same-sex and opposite-sex couples. The university did not say how many of the registrations were for gay and lesbian couples.

UF became the first university in Florida to offer health benefits to the same-sex partners of its gay and lesbian workers in December (story) and scheme go into effect this month.

Kyle Cavanaugh, U Florida's vice president for human resources, said Monday that he expects eventually more than 100 employees will register in the plan.
